At the time he caught the fish, a few of the locals treated him as if he was doing something wrong because he caught the fish on live bait
I don't understand the argument. Well, I mean, I get that learning how to use artificial is more technical but, where I'm lost is - what exactly is "it" we're trying to teach the next generation of anglers?
Do you guys see a problem with using live bait?
ps.

Jeez, I haven't caught a bass on live bait since I was a kid.
I know when we were fishing stripers on Long Island we never liked the live bait guys becuase the stripers would usually swallow the clams or whatever they were using and die. But I'll tell you what, they sure caught bigger fish then we normally did.
I guess I wouldn't like it if it was killing too many fish that weren't being caught for food.

That's a really nice bass! Congrats to your nephew. I sometimes use live bait when I target crappie and end up catching bass and catfish at times. I don't see any problem with using live bait. I can almost guarantee 90% or better of all anglers have used live bait sometime in their lives. How much did she weigh? Did he release the fish?

Thanks, sir!
and yes we released the fish.
He was really happy with the fish as you can see in the video...
Agree, been discussed a lot before but to answer the questions, no I don't think there should be anything wrong with it. It bores the life out of me personally and I see not accomplish in it for me personally, but it's still fishing. I can promise my son and I will be doing a lot of it for awhile until he gets older, even though he's already a casting freak at 2 1/2.

Seeing how you have been a member since merely mid October and somehow donated nearly 4,000 posts you could chip in on your bandwidth like a real TFFer would.
Oh and of course I gotta throw in a so I can say what I want but have a "just kidding" clause thrown in.

I never thought about chipping in on the forum before but I think you have a point, Cameron.
I know some of the big bass records were caught on live bait. I heard a guide one time a big bass lake say how bad it is to use live bait when the big bass on record he has was caught on live bait. It is ok but I think you should teach him other ways. I crappie fish with minnows and jigs. I prefer the jigs because I like to feel that thump but sometimes they will only hit the minnows. With the price of gas now you have to be versitily to catch a few fish. Just my thoughts on the matter. Tell your son he did GREAT. Steve

Well, Im against all those cheaters who are using fake artificial baits. If you cant afford live bait and dont have the skill to catch them in a cast net or know where to dig to get worms should just stay at home and not fish instead of trying to trick the poor fish into eating plastic. Cheaters!
I couldn't see the video at work -- good for that kid! Look how calm he was bringing that fish in. He's going to be a slayer in a few years! He acts like he's caught a nice fish before!
Dont sweat it Richard F, it was a great video and a nice fish! Good for him, catching that nice fish. I have read articles by Roland Martin on useing large(6-8) golden shiners for free lineing bass fishing. I do understand why it is against the rules on the tours, but for just plain ol pleasure fishing...FISH ON!!

Very NICE fish and VERY COOL VIDEO! I would not worry about what other people say. Contrary to popular belief, using live bait does not guarantee success, nor is it cheating. Your nephew EARNED that fish! I have found that I can catch MORE fish on artifical baits vs live bait. There is an art to fishing with live bait, and one which I have NOT mastered yet. The choice of hook and the hook set was perfect. Your nephew handled the fish with care. Thanks for sharing the video, I loved the sound as well. Congrats to YOU and YOUR nephew. Last but not least, thanks for your contribution to the SPORT!
For those of you that think fishing with live bait for bass is a given, click on this link. I have found this to be very true. www.trophybassonly.com/id103.htm

Its a shame that some would even consider anything wrong with fishing livebait for bass. Many have an elitist view, a better than thou view. And even more a shame that those who feel that way have forgot the true meaning of fishing.
First of all, its fantastic anytime you take a kid fishing. Secondly, its great video. Thirdly, anyone that has an issue with it needs to get a grip. I will fish both, because my neices, nephews and daughter dont have the patience or yet developed the skill to productively catch bass on artificial lures. And even if they did and still preferred to use live bait, thats ok too! I enjoy angling with artificials because its the figuring out part that i consider a challenge but thats me and not everyone is like me.
What is wrong with some people, where they think its their business to get involved and make judgements about what others do. If its not illegal and it doesnt hurt anyone, SHUT UP!
sorry for the harshness, just the thogut of this kid accomplishing something and someone trying to take away from that just gets my goat!
I hate the attitude about artificial bait. It's found it's way over to the salt side to.
My buddies boss is one of these elitist jerks, refers to me as a "pot licker" because I use live bait. I take great pleasure in sending him pictures of the fish we're out catching....since they haven't caught a single thing in the last 2 or 3 trips.

I have to ask you one question. Did you have fun? Becuase thats all that matters. He caught a large fish, dosent matter what he used. We all fish becuse its FUN. I would have just as much fun watching my son land a fish like that then catching it myself. So GREAT JOB, WAY TO GO and fish with what ever you want!!!!!!!!!!!
