Hi all - new to the forum and pretty new to saltwater fishing. But lots and lots of freshwater experience. Will be at South Padre June 7-14 and the boy (13) wants to fish blue water - can't talk him into bay fishing. Dad is on a budget. Mom will probably go too.

I'm looking for guide and trip (how long) recommendations.

Also will probably try to do some shoreline/pier/non-boat fishing while we're there too so any recommendations on places and techniques for that would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance. Been reading the posts and this looks like a great forum. Thanks again.

I love fishing the surf on South Padra, you can catch a lot of fish. You will mainly catch whitings (see below) and they are real good and fun to catch, and you can do it when right there with the family the kids play on the beach:

Just get your self a surf rode and dead shrimp, 2 or 3 hooks, and I use one those claw sinkers kinda like the pic below

That keep it out there and holds good in the sand. You can buy all of this while you are down that at Wal-mart for cheap. Just cast out passed the second sand bar. Go to the 3rd sand bar and you will catch all kinds of stuf, Sea Ray, sharks (good eating). Good luck, have fun.

The whiting sounds fun - thanks for that - we'll have to give it a go.

Still interested in any offshore recommendations anyone may have.

You can try Master Plan charters but it def. wont be on budget unless you budgeted for $1500..

I've been out on Captain Murphys charter boat. Really good time and we caught a lot of fish.

The jetty is good fishing, you can catch just about everything, and get the chance to see dolphins and sea turtles.
Matter of fact, I prefer the jetty to the shore.

Captain Murphys is a good choice for 'pole fishing' for snapper and such and if you schedule a day with them you should call early and reserve a spot at the back of the boat

the Master Plan has been sold to a commercial fishing outfit and the previous captain that made a name for that boat has moved onto another

Bryan sold the Master Plan? Wooo.. I thought I heard he was.. well... hmmm..

I thought he had just bought another boat and he was adding it to his fleet. Ehh.. Apparently I am all mixed up.

Must have happened recently I was just down there in March getting a new fridge installed in the condo and hadn't heard anything.

Damn...
