My VW Jetta just recently started making noise that started out sounding like tire noise. It has slowly grown in intensity and rotating and balancing didn't do a thing to help. The tires are Michelins and the last set as well as these never made any noise.
Its starting to get where you can almost feel a vibration. Anybody ever experience this?

My wife has my truck today and as soon as she gets home I'm going to lift the truck up and check the suspension and bearings. I just thought someone might have a little first hand experience with this noise.

Thanks

When I had a similar problem on my cousin's Saturn, it was tread separation. I'd look there, but if they were rotated and balanced recently, that should have been spotted...

sounds like possibly a wheel bearing going out.. you'll only hear it under a load.. drive down a vacant road and swerve to the left and to the right. one direction it should get louder, and the other direction it should get quieter. i believe the direction you swerve that makes it louder is the opposite side- because you are pushing the wieght to the other side of the car. example:swerve right and the left tire loads up

Definatly sounds like a wheel bearing if it's not a cupped tire.

bad wheel usually comes into your hearing at a certain speed- the frequency of sound comes into the human ear threshold. a bad wheel bearing is usually constant throughout any speed. gets louder the faster you go and more load you put on it.

I lifted the car and spun the wheels. The left rear doesn't sound good so I've ordered new wheel bearings for both sides.

As efficient as this car is the wheel bearings are not serviceable. They are huge ball bearings and aren't cheap. The VW dealer wants around 250 for the thing but I have ordered them from a TDI-PARTS for 165 and thats with overnight shipping.

I have to take off early tomorrow and hopefully the bearings are here. My car is supposed to be driven by my daughter Saturday going to Gadsden AL to fish the second WBT tourney. The bearings don't look like they are too hard to change out but I'll have to get the 33mm socket to tighten the hub.

Thanks guys. I just talked to her as they are approaching Vicksburg. She is traveling with Denese Freeman who won the amateur side at Lewisville. I hope they both make the cut.
