Hey guys....my brother in law is driving down with his family the 2nd week of June and I'd like to take him out to Grapevine for some night fishing for carp or cats.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction as where to go or what bait to use? Is night fishing out there generally better than daytime fishing?

Night fishing is generally better, but only because the temperatures are more tolerable lol.

Carp often bite all day long at GV.

thanks Starless...for someone who is a non-carp master...is corn out of the can threaded on a hook a good bet?

Always.

3-6 kernals of sweet corn, threaded on a number 6 ( Not 6/0 ) hook. And Chum the area with the same.

Soak the deer corn for a day and boil it for 30 to 45 minutes with salt and vanilla.

There is a thread about the preparation of deer corn titled "Maize" with good info.

Deer corn (also called maize here), can be a very good bait and chum. It's harder than sweet corn, so it's difficult to put on a hook, which is why we usually use it on a "hair rig."

See here for a discussion on how to prepare field corn:

http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/2257170/Maize#Post2257170

and here for a discussion on using a hair rig:

http://pleasurefishing.com/html/hairrigs.htm

A hair rig can be used whenever you normally fish with bait directly on the hook, but it really shines as part of a bolt rig:

The bolt rig uses a heavy sinker (usually 2 to 3 oz.) to help set the hook when a carp ingests a bait and swims away. In the above picture, the large "ball" is the sinker, and the claptrap it's connected to is designed to keep the lead in place during normal use; but if the mainline breaks or the lead gets snagged, the fish can get free so it's no longer tethered to the weight.
