FFTUCK

what do you want to catch and how ?

I have fished the Keys many times. There are 3 types of
fishing down there , flats , bluewater trolling ,and light tackle.
I think the flats and bluewater are pretty much self
explanatory .
Light tackle ( my favortite) is unique in my expericence to
the keys. The light tackle boats are mostly centerconsoles , 25-28 ft. They fish the channels , harbors , reefs , gulfside and atlantic sides out to 20 miles or so.
It all depends on the weather, whats hitting, and what the
customer wants to catch.

Flats fishing is fun , but I have always caught more fish
on the light tackle boats. Bluewater trolling is more expensive , and very boring if you are not hooked up to
something big.

When are you going ? the best guides book solid 6months
to a year in advance.

Im goin june 17-24, probably not gonna do the deep sea fishing thing.
Never been saltwater fishing before, so im not real sure what to do,
just wanna catch a bunch of fish and not have to go 50 miles out to do it.

Ok--

you want to go with one of the " light tackle " boats. It is
not hard to catch 10-12 species in a single day. I like fishing
the wrecks on the gulf side. Anchor up and chunk a net full
of pilchards over the wreck and a feeding frenzy starts
immeadiately.
The guide I used for several years is no longer fishing.
Check with the guys over on this forum ,

I would strongly recommend a private charter, the " head
boats " are for tourists. They will take you to the
reef and you will fish the whole time in one spot for
yellowtail snapper ( 12 inches is a big one ) with a
bunch of drunks.

Now for the must do's while in Key West,
drink a beer at Sloppy's Joes and Irish Kevin's on
Duval street.

At least one meal at A%B Lobster House.

If you have a car, it is worth the time to drive up
to Islamorada (75m north ) and go to Robie's ( search youtube for feeding the tarpon at Robie's)

This place is new since I've been there , but it looks
interesting. Marathon is about 45 miles from KW.

If you don't have a great time in KW , it is your own
damn fault . smile

will be there in March. its our first stop on a cruise. would love to fish it, but would be all Catch and release. I think the wife would get a kick out of some big shark fishing- do they do that there as well?

Ronnie, March is the very beginning of the tarpon migration,
a little eary actually. They may be there in late March.
Big Hammerheads follow the tarpon schools like the wolves used to follow the buffalo herds.

Shark fishing anywhere in the gulf is more a summer sport.

One thing I don't like about cruises , they don't give you
enough time on shore. Fishing charters can be problematic.

good luck
