Popper-Dropper combo for those areas where both bass and sunfish abound. Lake Madison bass caught Friday May 9th. The bass took the popper but I put the dropper fly on it's lip just for the photo. I caught several sunnies on the dropper but only the one bass..

I really like the popper/dropper combo and fish it often. BG seem to prefer the dropper, but sometimes they will also hit the popper and sometimes both....a great shearching rig.

Nice fish! I don't know why I don't fish the popper/dropper combo more than I do, it's so successful.

Never heard of a popper dropper. Sounds like fun. I have tied one fly on top, and off the hook another fly...I think it is called a dropper. But never thought of a popper dropper. I have used a float, a crappie candy, and below that a small spoon. Got a couple on the spoon. But if the spoon wasn't there they would hit the crappie candy...maybe I did something wrong in tying it up. I am no good at spoons, that was the first fish I have ever caught on a spoon. Did that at the spillway. I don't think it would work without a little current though.

I'm going to have to start doing that. I use an indicator or a little bobber. Makes more sense to use something that floats AND has a hook in it.

Yesterday I was fly fishing at a community lake, terrible fishing yesterday...just a couple of nibbles, not any fish wanted to totally commit to anything I put out there. Bream were hitting it and tasting it, and seemed to be the only ones who even cared. I finally tried my little tiny Thill bobber....it is perfect for fly fishing...looks like a strike indicater, as it is basically what it is. I thought maybe I was missing the bites, due to the heavier weight rod. I even tried nymphs, scud, and a worm....STILL NOTHING. I tried poppers. I tried the dependable woolly bugger. I even tried floating bugs like a royal wulff...(spelling?) One of my problems being new at fly fishing is how far to go down with each type of fly, and also how it should be worked. I tried no movement, slow, fast, and such...but no luck. I did not have weight on me to pinch on, and that might of done the trick. I have a crayfish looking fly, but since I probably wasn't at the bottom, no takers. Does anyone know where I can read on how to work these flies? I think if the fish were biting I would of caught at least bream. They seem to be tenacious feeders and always want what I have to offer, if they are anywhere around.

You kinda have to try all variations:slow, fast, jerky, smooth, deep, shallow, the middle. Also, some times of day are just tougher. A lot of places just seem to shut down after 9:00 AM. Not to say that the fishing is impossible but more likely it becomes very much more technical once the sun is higher in the sky.

Pre-dawn and dawn, dusk and evening are fine times.

But heck, if you have the window, take it and go fishing!

Yes that is part of my problem...I am not an early riser so being there at dawn is not going to happen for me. I am bad about going in the worst part of the day. But I will fish until almost dark. I stayed until dusk last night. I should get up early, just hate to since I am mainly a night owl, always have been.

Oh I forgot to mention during the summer I do fish at night. Sometimes I fish at night when the weather is cold, but usually I do not fish at night for safety reasons. If one of my kids goes with me, I feel safer. But as a whole I think it is unwise to be out there by myself. If I see other people around, sometimes I stay late. But if it clears out, I decide I'd better head to the house.

Yesterday I went tubing on a little lake north of plano and caught 75-100 bluegill and redear. The redear weighed up to 1# and the bluegill up to 3/4#. I wsa fishing with wooly buggers, cap spiders and green weenies, and they loved them all. Kelli I sometimes strip them in an inch or two at a time. Quite often the bream hit the flies on the way down. Yesterday they may just not have been biting at the place you were fishing, that happens sometimes. Oh, I didn't get out there until 10:30 in the morning and left about 3:30, so you don't have to be an early riser to catch bream.

Wow Clifford that must of been a blast. I have pink weenie flies...and I don't think I made a chartreuse one, but it is possible. Sounds like those were nice sized fish, and plentiful. You were blessed!

Stripping the line an inch or two...now I don't usually do that. I did close to that yesterday I would guess, but for a very short time. That is because I was doing everything I could think of to get the fish to bite. I will have to try that method more often Clifford, thanks again.
