What do you do when bass "slap" at your frog and they're not taking it at all. You've tried following up with T-rigs, wacky rigs, jigs, and other top-water baits. They won't hit any of them, but they sure will throw a frog out of the water. Please help. By the way the water clarity is pretty clear.

Maybe sink it a little bit with a weighted hook.

Throw the frog back in there and leave it. Once they hit at it, leave it alone and see if they come back for it.

  • Don't set the hook the very second that the fish hits the frog. Give it a chance to take the frog down, and then set the hook. Otherwise, the fish will be sucking in water and you will pull the frog out of its mouth before it has a hold of the frog.
  • Pitch the frog right back to that spot and more than likely the fish will strike it again, as the first time it was just tail flashing your frog.
  • When you see the bass eat your frog, it makes you feel like you have to set the hook. Do not set the hook until you feel the weight of the fish.
  • Add scented worms to the frog body.

Have you adjusted the retrieve speed or cadence? Those would be my first options. The bass is obviously somewhat interested in the bait, now you just have to figure out how to make it commit and eat it. Try a senko type bait or a fluke for a follow up.

If the water is clear like you say, I would speed up my retrieve / cadence. In my experience with clear water sometimes a bass will commit to a lure until it gets right up to it. Once they get a good look at it they will short strike or slap at it. I have seen this numerous times, especially with spinnerbaits and topwater lures. I've always found that a faster retrieve is much more effective. It forces the bass to commit and it lessens the chance of them identifying your lure as non-prey. You will probably get less strikes but you should get a much better hook-up ratio.

set your frog rod down right away (don't even reel it in) and chunk a senko or weightless worm right on top of where you got the hit. i always have a senko rod sitting by my feet ready to go when i'm frog fishing.

Most times they won't hit it again. Sometimes they will hit a worm followed up. (Most time's not.) You can try a Spro Type frog. Frog fishing is an exact science. The catch ratio is very low. But it's fun. Some days they just won't nail it. They just slap at it. (You can try a trailer hook but it tends to hang up in the weeds.)
Just "bite the bullet" and keep going and play the odds and try for the next fish.

The key on a frog as has been stated above is (and this is hard to do) to wait before you set the hook. Usually I will count to three before I set the hook. If you jerk your rod too soon, you will rip the frog out of its mouth.

everything mentioned above is a great suggestion. if a fish just slaps at it you can kill your retreve andlet it sink to the bottom. if that doesnt work throw back to the same spot. make sure to time your hook sets. wait until you feel em

the best way to increase your hookups with a frog that i have found is to reel in with your rod tip at 12:00, once the fish hits stop reeling and drop your rod to 3:00. then let the fish take that little bit of slack out of your line. once all the slack is gone, set the hook like a mad man.

There are also days when the fish are very dormant, and they don't want the frog, but they cannot help but swipe at it. On those days it seems like the frog is the only lure that will make them show them selves, but it sure is heartbreaking sometimes when they will not commit. Another thing on that kind of day, you might get swipes all day with nothing then they will turn on and you can load the boat in a few minutes. My experience is with the hollow bodied frogs like the Spro, I have not fished the toads much.

I had this happen in the Weekend Series. I threw back in with a fluke and got bit right away, of course I missed that bit too.

I've also seen where you get bit, throw back in and can't sniff a bite, come back 10-15min later and catch the fish. Also, happened in the Weekend series. Coach
