Try not to gill fish, as it can hurt there gill rakers, Possibly killing the fish.

Ok, you say it every time, and it is time for me to step in. I'm tired of this. Do you know what the gill raker does, gg? Do you know where it is located? By your statement, I don't think you do. The gill raker is actually on the inside of the gill arch and aids in feeding. It is unlikely that you will injure that specific part when you hold a fish up by its "gills". So, you are wrong in that. What could be damaged when people hold fish up by the gills is the gill arch and/or filaments themselves. The filaments are the vital part of the oxygen exchange in the fish. When you have necrotic gills, the oxygen exchange is less efficient. It's sort of like when your lung capacity is decreased due to smoking or whatever (not a shot at the guys that smoke...just an example). Usually people are that are holding the fish up by the "gills" are actually holding the fish up by the operculum, which is the bony plate that covers and protects the gills. I've seen carp with large portions of the gills exposed and they were fine. That being said, I don't condone people holding a fish up by the operculum. It is best for all fish to be held with the body properly supported. I'm not trying to be mean, but if you are going to harp on people every time they hold a fish the "wrong way" (some people have never thought about it), then you need to stop doing it with a faulty statement. So there's your lesson for today, GG. I hope you pay attention.

I'm sorry, I thought that the gill arches where called the rakers.... That's what I've always heard them called.
I'll back off on it. I'm just trying to help people handle fish the "right way."

Gill rakes, or Gill rakers (Anat.), horny filaments, or progresses, on the inside of the branchial arches of fishes, which help to prevent solid substances from being carried into gill cavities.

Well, I was a few hours away from it at UNT before I got my current job, so I will probably finish at SFA. Hopefully SFA will take the hours you earned at UNT as most schools will only take up to 60 hours of lower level classes and are reluctant to take upper level courses or will only take a few wanting a student complete 30-45 hours at their university. Good luck and I do hope you finish soon.

the only thing i have seen from holding a carp by the gills is down underneath towards the mouth, the skin will rip real easy but it ain't of no consequence cuz if it's me the carp is fixin' to be cut bait anyways

I didn't suggest that they were built in handles. I don't think people should hold them up by the operculum. My statements were in response to GG always saying that it is the gill rakers that are being damaged. There are far more fragile areas in the gills than the rakers themselves.
