Inspired by Robin's presentation on Urban Fly Fishing at the Red River Fly Fishers meeting, I decided I needed to try my backyard creek. Well, yesterday it looked like chocolate soup and today it looked like pea soup. Visibility was not great for fish or fisherman, so the catching left something to be desired. I managed one bright pumpkinseed and three green sunfish in an hour's fishing. Caught them on a black conehead woolly bugger and a Rubber-legged Bead-head Whitlock Red Fox Squirrel Hair Nymph (that may be the longest fly name in the book).

Anyway, it was good to get out between patches of rain and see a bend in the rod.

Thanks Mick

Fishing beats not fishing across the boards! Can you point us in the direction of a recipe for that red fox squirrel nymph?

Sure!

Here's the standard version, without the beadhead or rubber legs:

And another, with closer pictures:

This one, though mistakenly named (there's no squirrel tail in the pattern), shows the version I was tying and fishing this week:

thank you Mick! I have some free time this weekend (I hope) and plan on spending at least a portion of it tying and fishing as well as hanging out with my youngest while mamma is out of town.

Hey Robin,
Please remind me. How old is your son? And does he have his own vice, yet?

I have plenty of vices, but since I don't tie flies I don't have a vise.

Wow guys, generosity abounds with fly anglers and that is a part of what I love about this sport passionate pursuit.
Let me ask him if he'd enjoy a vise of his own to tie with.
