Compession check before I buy

I'm looking at buying an 89 Evinrude 150. As long as the Compression is good on it, I'll buy it.
I'm a first time boat owner, so what do I look for to make sure the compression check is good? About what should this engine read? and how much of a range do I allow? Is it ok to get a reading when the engine is cold? or does it have to be warmed up first?
Thanks, John

Thanks... So I guess somewhere between 90 and 100 are good numbers?
Does it have to be warm or can you get close enough with it cold?

Take it to North Texas fiberglass before you commit to buying it. Micheal will check it out for free....and give you a GOOD, fair assessment of it.
It's so much the compression itself , although important, but the difference in numbers from one hole to another. I agree. Can't beat someone who knows what to look for and will do it for free. If the seller doesn't like the idea, run away.

Cold engine generally tests lower. Ask the owner to warm it up, if he cranks it without hooking it up to the hose first, walk away.
Difference between cylinders is more important than actual readings - some say they should all be within 5% of the average with no more than 10% between lowest & highest - I wouldn't buy unless the lowest is within 5% of the highest. Maybe 7%.
johnnyrude V6's, look for neighborhood of 90lbs.
