We discussed this at the RRFF meeting Tuesday night. There'll be some presentations by local experts, fly casting instruction, fly tying demonstrations, a raffle of many items, food and drink, etc. It should be a low key but fun and informative day, just perfect for someone just getting started either fly fishing or fly tying. Lots of helpful folks willing to share their knowledge and passion for fly fishing with others.

But the sink line and sink tip seminar has me especially intrigued. But who knows what all I'll learn. I may walk away with some brand new attitude on fishing. That happens when most excellent speakers preside.

Robin, they will run back to back starting at 1:00 and each speaker has 45 minutes. The current plan is to go in this order, Sean, Rob, and then Steve. We'll have the full schedule posted soon.

YES IT IS A KID FRIENDLY EVENT!!! Kids are welcome in any of the casting classes, but we will have a "Fly Casting for Kids" class this year. This class will be lead by Al Crise, FFF Master Casting Instructor, and Taylor Walker, a 15 yr old that is a member of TFO's Advisory Staff. And of course the demo fly tier's love to work with kids. The one item to be aware of, is that due to building space limitations the primary activity after lunch will be the fly fishing seminars and that may not appeal to all kids. However, in past years, some parents have taken a break to go down to the docks to fish for a while before going to the seminars. Catching a fish seems to increase any kids interest level in learning how to catch more fish. Amazing how that works isn't it? Robin, bring Evan along, he will be very welcome. Helping to get kids interested in fly fishing is one of the goals of this event. Rex

I wish I could get my son interested. He just thinks it is too much work. (he just turned 15)He doesn't want to LEARN, he wants to DO. If the fish aren't biting, he is BORED.

Kelly, We will be doing a lot of things that should be interesting for 15 YO boys. If he sees Taylor cast (she puts most seasoned adults to SHAME) he might get interested. She taught me more in my 1st class than anyone else because she has patience (and is hard headed like her dad, sorry Rex). The RR group is very family oriented and tends to draw people in to fly fishing because they pitch it as a family type sport. We'd love to see you guys (since I've yet to meet you).

I met Taylor, and I guess because of that I must of met you, but don't know your real name. She was a real nice young lady. I met her at the Bean and Burger, or Burger and Bean...after Athens fly event this year. I heard she was a great fly angler! I would love to come to the event, I just really hate the idea of facing that awful traffic. I went there in Jan I think this year...and the traffic was a nightmare for me. (not as bad as my Cabelas trip though...) I may take the long route and avoid the main traffic, but it will take a really long time to get there if I do. My son was at the Athens Tx Freshwater Fisheries fly event with me. He thinks learning to cast a fly rod is too much work. He thinks the same thing about using a bait caster...lol. Oh well...I think he will come around one of these days. I am trying to get him to LOVE fishing. He does when the bigger fish bite. But he doesn't like it when things aren't too hot if you know what I mean.

For the longest time, I thought I was gonna have to work next Saturday, but now I don't. I missed the event last year, but now I'm planning on attending it this year. On the rrff site, it seems there shoud be some fly fishing from 6 - 9am before the event begins. Who would I meet up with and where would I go, should I want to attend this pre-gathering?

Kube, the fishing is an informal activity this year. We tryed to organize some fishing groups the first year that we did this event, but the results were mixed. The biggest problem is that everyone helping with the event is busy with the "last minute scramble" trying to ensure that everything will be ready at 9:00.
There is some great fishing available within the park and we hope that everyone will take time to wet a line while they are there. There is a copy of the park's map on the club's website that has a few "fly fisher friendly" spots marked on it. There are also some fishing tips listed. A couple of spots that are easily accessble from the bank and have room for a backcast are the old boat ramp area and the current boat ramp, but the current ramp can get crowded in the summer.
For the Red River Fly Fishers, Rex
