Anyone fish around south deer island in galveston westbay? Anyone care to offer any tips for that area? Places to launch, things to avoid? Planning on taking my boat down next week and for some reason that area looks like my target.

Where will you launch? Not much experience around Deer Island, but I've fished other spots close to there....Meacom's/ Green's Cut, Pirate Cove, etc.

Well I am not 100% sure yet but I think there is a marina at Teichman point and it looks to be the closest according to texas lakes and bays. There is confederate reef there by S. Deer Isle and it looks real promising. It has a deep hole on the south end that also looks promising. I've never taken a boat down to galveston, only rockport and port A so this is all just wild guesses and a little help from T l and B book. We are staying in galveston so I figure my easiest acess to anything is going to be west bay.

I wish I could help you more. I just don't have much experience with that area. Let me know if you'd like some specific's about the places I mentioned.

Well found deer isle, was little boat traffic on Friday but man it was busy on Saturday. Caught 2 sheephead, lots of croaker, 1 redfish, 1 stingray, several hardheads. Fished the incoming tide both days. Went to eastbay saturday afternoon and caught 1 redfish. Diablo, there is a ramp at the end of 8 mile road which is very close to the area. Its not much of a ramp, but I got a pontoon boat in and out of it.

I was around that area on spring break.....more croaker than I've caught in years. Glad you had some luck. What was the trip like from the ramp to your fishing spot? What was the water depth like, etc.? I'm real skittish around that area because it's shallow.

It was 2-3' and I never had any trouble navigating where I wanted to go but i did hear that the tide was 1' to 1.5' above normal so this may have helped. The currents are very strong through there. It sure looked like the shell reef there would be a hotspot, maybe just have to hit it at the right time.

I was there over spring break....same thing on the tides. One night we came creeping into Pirates Beach. The water was over the dock....
