Regarding New Mexico flies for October, where exactly will you be fishing? That will largely determine what flies you need. If you are fishing someplace like the San Juan River, then think very, very small for your flies -- midges and blue winged olives in size 18 and smaller. October is a bit late to fish on some of the smaller streams in the mountains, but you might still do OK on warmer days with a "hopper dropper" rig with a grasshopper up front and a smaller beadhead nymph (like a Prince nymph) trailed behind.

My wife and I typically make a trip to New Mexico each fall and have fished a dozen spots around Northern New Mexico, so let me know where you're headed and I'll suggest some flies.

I like that Texas Fly Report.... I like the way you can look up flies by variety of fish that like them.... I have made a couple from there if not mistaken. Mainly it is a bookmarked site and I forget I have it on there...lol......but I really do enjoy looking at it.

Wish2BFishN, I am a current FWFF'er, and love the club. My articles are in Feb, and May newsletters. I love the club, and have fished with some great guys, including Jim Teeny. I, in the past year, have expanded my knowledge, and increased the number of places I fish by a lot!!! We just had our yearly auction, and it was cool. One lucky guy left with a new kayak!!! I was pissed, now I have to go buy one. Anyway, come check us out!!

Trout Bum - I had wanted to go last night to your club auction. I have read all the past newsletters that are on-line and it looks like a great group of people. My problem is time (like everyone else!) so I had other things that I had to do.
I will drop by sometime - would love to meet up with some new folks and learn all I can. I am trying to also include my 15 yr old son as I think this would be another great father/son thing. He is currently in to his dirt bike (he just bought this past weekend) so not overly interested in fishing right now.
I have been intrigued by fly fishing all my life and decided I would give it a go (how many of us saw A River Runs Trough It and said right then we would do that some day!).

I am very interested in joining the club and maybe even going on an outing or 2 so I can improve my skills and meet new people.

I really enjoy this forum and all the help you more experienced fly fisher are willing to impart! For that I am truly grateful!!

Maybe someone could put together a "Beginners" outing so those of us new to the sport could fish with the experienced folks. Something simple that we could learn/improve basic skills.

I was thinking something simple - like maybe a city park lake. Something where we can learn basic stuff without having to have a tube or kayak. Maybe even bank fish!

I'm willing to drive pretty much anywhere - I live in Hurst, work downtown Ft Worth but am open to most of DFW area.

I was reading Robin's Ruminations (is that your site?) and was fascinated by the fishing for bream on a creek in Arlington!!

Les (keebranch) of Fort Worth Fly Fishers was kind enough to take me on a trip to those creeks. I had a blast catching fish and Les was telling me that it was an off day! You'd want to have your roll cast down in those creeks but Les is a good roll cast coach.

The Trinity River has some good spots upstream from "the plant". Under Bryant-Irvin Rd. near Lockheed Rec Area. That is a good creek to fish. Also there near downtown where that retention dam is located, that is where trout get dropped in winter. I feel fairly confident that there are plenty of (warm water) fish in there the rest of the year as well.

I am going with a group from my church to Glorieta NM. I have been there before but not for a fishing trip. This is organized by Jason Cruise Outdoor Ministry and they have a whole document on what to expect/bring. I'll be reading this over - so I'm not totally sure where all we will be fishing but there is a list of rivers and flies to bring.
