I bought a boat that was left uncovered for a long time. The clear coat is about 90% gone and only left in shadows of where the sun couldn’t touch. Other than that, the paint that is left behind is dull. The boat is black with silver flakes. As we work on it to get her back into the water, we realize ITS HOT! We are thinking of painting it a lighter color. We have even thought about sanding, priming, and using spray paint ourselves. From the bumper line down the hull is fine, we will keep that intact. The rest of the boat's paint is shot. Any thoughts on using spray paint and a lot of lacquer? What about taking it to a shop to paint? Does Maaco do boats?

UCR Graphics quoted me a price of 525.00 to wrap the top cap on an older 19ft Boat we were thinking about redoing. Seems that is a lot cheaper than preping and painting. Just my thoughts.

You mean the stuff like you see on some of those radio station trucks and such? I guess they have colors and designs you can pick?

They will help you design a wrap that you choose.

So has anyone ever attempted to spray paint their boat?

Here's the scoop! Automotive paint is not made to go on a boat. You will need to get in touch with a local body shop and see what techique they use on , say a corvete, then add a hardner to the paint.........or go to your local marina and ask them for interlux or petit paint brochure. They both make a solid color top side paint that works great. one is brightside the other is easy-poxy. About $28 a quart. one coat coverage. Brush/roller/spray...easy to use.

I have used auto enamel, and urethane with a hardener. The urethane is harder to spray, and tended to glob up on me. The auto enamel won't last as long. Both were satisfactory depending on how nice you want it to look.

So a roller or a brush, wont that make the finish drip or not look so smooth?
