All, it seems like on most lakes and rivers people just dont take the time to actually weigh thier record catches (minus this group).

Specifically, look at the following lakes...
Calaveras
Braunig
Medina
Canyon
Medina River

I KNOW thier are large fish in these lakes and I have seen and in some cases caught fish bigger than this.

Certified scales...what is the best choice? Buy a nice one and have it certified?

From what I understand, there is a place in Bastrop that certifies them. I cant remember how much it costs, but it obviously wont be more than a quality scale.

On some of these lakes it seems like the ones who had them certified own most of the records on the lake.

If i started a quest, i know i could get my name on a bunch of those.

Get a Reuben Heaton scale and take it to Bastrop scale to get it certified.

Loc: TX, of course.
Or join the IGFA, and have them cert the scales of your choice.

TPWD accepts IGFA cert'd scales.

If I remember correctly, IGFA only certifies scales to 100 lbs. I think that's why Jason took his 120 lb scale to Bastrop to get it certified.

So, if you get the 60 lb scale, you could go the IGFA route, or just drive over to Bastrop and have it done on the spot. If you get the 120 lb scale, then I think Bastrop will be your best choice (unless you want to drive to Tyler).

Not all the places on that list are scale calibration places. Bastrop Scale isn't even on that list and that's where Joedy Gray told Jason to get his done. Double D Scale in Tyler is where I will take my 120 lb scale next week, but that's because they're only 30 minutes away.

GG, that's right. Those Berkley scales are not reliable in the long run and not every scale can be certified.

Chris, you have to take it to a place that calibrates and certifies scales, not just a place that has a certified scale.

Call TPWD and they will answer you question.

Looks like another $100+ down the drain for the Tedster. I thought HUNTING was expensive! Geez.

Don't worry, I love this stuff!

Is that also true of the similar Rapala scales?

Yeah, I don't think any of the cheap(er) digital scales are certifiable.

Chris, here's the websites for Bastrop Scale and Double D Scale in Tyler.

Any scale can be certified so long as it passes certification. You pay for it pass or fail. It is the process of the certification that costs $25 not the sticker.

A scale certification firm must be certified to certify scales.

Krista is right about the IGFA. They only certify scales up to 100 lbs.

Hmmm...I didn't think all scales were certifiable. Good to know.

I went through too many of those scales to even think about getting them certified.

Chris, Joedy Gray told me to check with Rafe Brock who is a biologist with twpd. His number is 817-732-0761. I was asking the same questions about certifications but I haven't had a chance to call Rafe yet. If you can call him, ask him if there is a place closer to dfw that we can have our scales certified!

I think Jason did that research already. If I remember correctly, there are only a handful of places in the State that will certify them.

Big Ted, don't you live kind of close to Bastrop? It's in the lost pines area.
