Never had much luck storing mullet in the freezer for cut bait mullet.


how do most of you do it? They always get nasty when I freeze them.

They don't keep well....and actually I don't think frozen is that good of a bait. Mullet are abundant and can easily be used "fresh" rather than frozen. Fresh dead is almost as good as live for reds, but frozen lags way behind, IMO.

I was born and raised in South Florida. We used to net Mullet and freeze them...the one thing we did was to put salt on them...we found that it kept the meat firmer.

In water or dry torrey?

meadow: yeah, but I'm not going to waste bait. If we hit the jetties or somewhere I need cut bait, they'll work to start with any way...

I catch them, chunk them, freeze them in a ziplock, no water. I use it offshore for snapper and have used bags that was 2 to 3 years old and they work fine.

The finger muller I freeze whole, the same way, and use them with a snapper slapper rig behind shrimp boats offshore for black fin tuna. Works great.

Sorrey took so long to respond. We kept them damp to hold the salt,then covered them in salt and placed them in zip lock bags. Spaced them to wher they were laying flat and not stacked. This will woork with whole,fellet or chunked.
What I mean by Damp is just getting them wet...no water in the bag.Make sure your freezer is good and cold...you want them to freeze as fast as possabble. We had an extra freezer for Bait.LOL
