Howdy, My girlfriend and I are from the Dallas area and we've been wanting to go deep sea fishing for years. We have a vacation coming up in May and were hoping to go somewhere along the coast. We are looking for suggestions as to where to go, where to stay, and any pointers. Neither of us has been fishing in years. Ironically, we live by a lake and do a lot of skiing/tubing with the kids, but rarely fish! Anyway, we would like to stay under $150 a person for the fishing. An 8-12 hour trip would be great. If anyone can point us in the right direction we would be very appreciative. We just want to have fun, get a tan, and catch some huge fish! We were looking at this place http://www.deepseaheadquarters.com/tripinfo/index.htm It's $95/person for a 12 hour trip which seems reasonable. Anyone tried them?

They have a pretty good reputation, although on an 8hr to 12hr partyboat trip, your fishing is going to be 2 red snapper and maybe a couple miscellaneous others. If you can afford it, you might be better off hiring a guide - there are some economical ones down there at Port Aransas - you'll most likely catch more (& better) fish for about the same money once you add in all the extras you pay for on the partyboat.

Since red snapper fishing season doesn't reopen until June 1st the boats at DSH and others are having a hard time getting enough folks to make a trip except for on the weekends.
And when the do go they are not catching much.
If you could postpone the trip until early June it would be different. Besides the 2 red snapper there will be a shot a an Amberjack or Grouper. Maybe some kings or a Ling.
Deep Sea headquarters would be my choice.

Honestly, like Awesum said you are pretty much just going to catch 2 red snapper and maybe you might get into a school of ajs. It's basically just a 100 dollar boat ride.
Your best bet is to hire a local bay or near shore guide and target the full spectrum.
Reds, Trout, Shark, Ling, Jacks, etc.
Might cost a few bills more but would be worth it, IMO. Lastly, no 12 or 15 hour trip is going to take you on a TRUE DEEP SEA trip anyways, now in FL or Cabo they can, but here you need to go out further.

DSM; If your just looking for an awsome day fighting big fish, and not looking for fish try this guy out: http://galvestonsharkfishing.com/I went out with him a few times and never had a bad time catching sharks, and the fight is unreal.... You won't go out to deap water, only a couple miles off shore, but if your about the fight and not the fish you cannot go wrong. Now that I have my own boat I fish almost exclusively for shark when I go to the coast.

What horror stories?
I have been out twice with him, and neither time was disappointing?
One thing I will say though, he goes out when a lot of charters cancel. We went out last 4th of July in rain w/ 4-6' water. Always felt safe and had a great time...

I think a person would have a lot more fun on a charter plus you wouldn't have to worry about the crowds it would be just you and your friends/family. Most of the charters have a set price and that price is( most of the time) for 4 people depending on the boat. P.M me and i can tell you of a place to go look for some boats/capts that will take you out just for the price of fuel and they have everything you will ever need all you need to do is show up.

SilverKing Adventures..
I have heard horror stories from lots of people on 2coolfishing.com. Enough to where I would say ask around on other forums.
-Z- I am a member on 2cool fishing and I know that there are alot of great people on that site. I signed up on that site 6 months ago and have gone offshore with several different people everywhere from 9miles to 140 miles and have never had a problem but i also did my homework on who I was going out fishing with. That being said anyone willing to go out fishing with a person having never met them or doing your homework on that person is taking a risk. The only exception is if you are going out fishing with a capt.
