I will be floating the brazos below P.K. May 9-11 for a little three day adventure. I have never fished this river before so I would like to know what kinds of flys should I concentrate on putting in my box for the trip.

Cats wiskers, woolies, poppers, etc. anthing olive or brown will work. You tag up with Spotted, Smallmouth, and LMB bass along the way. It should be loads of fun.

a cat's whisker is very similar to a woolie bugger, but has an additional portion of hair coming off of the head area of the fly, going back towards the bend of the hook. Does not have a hackle spun through the main body of the fly. Gray is a great color for that fly. Good luck, troutbum

Derek,
That's Bulldogs' recipe which Robin posted, and it's a great one. I make a minor change by using craft fur in lieu of artic fox to keep the cost in check. I feel that the fly's main avantage over a woolie bugger is that this fly rides hook up and the wing covers the hook making it more snag proof and stealthy.

For the Cat's Whisker, you can also keep the cost of Arctic Fox down by buying in bulk instead of buying the small patches or Zonker strips. A great source for bulk Arctic Fox is Dave Steinbaugh at Waters West Fly Shop in Port Angeles, Washington.

http://www.waterswest.com/articfox.htm

Dave's been supplying me with high quality Arctic Fox for years and even has a picture on his wall of my son with a smallmouth buffalo caught on a Cat's Whisker on the Red River. His prices are $5.50 for a quarter tail, $9.75 for a half tail (which is more than you'll ever need).

Mick

That is the best price I've seen. Why buy zonkers when you can get those tail sections at the same retail price?!
