Sam Walton is probably spinning like a dynamo in his grave over how bad his company has become. Wal-mart used to be a good place, they had everything. Since his death, it has done nothing but dive. I hate going there and will do everything in my power not to give them a dime. I wish there was someone who could compete with them.

I buy all my tackle form BPS,Cabela's,Academy or Anglers Lodge if I'm @ Amistad,so it would not hurt me any,but for the people that can't afford to travel or don't have internet access. That wouldn't be good.

I bet 70% plus, WM products on the shelf are imported. Nuff said. Buy U.S.!! Support our economy not china's. If WM works off of a 25% profit margin that means 75% of your money goes overseas to other economies. You want to help the U.S. buy only U.S. products from WM let see how long they are in business that is what I am saying. Make them sell U.S. products. Check the label see where it came from.

A high percentage of your baits are actually made in the USA...however the coolers and shirts and shoes and glasses and nic nacks are made else where....I believe that Magellan and Columbia fishing wear is made in the US...a little more expensive..but good clothing and not supporting red china.

That's true for the soft plastics maybe but, not the hard baits. Check them out even Rapala is made in Ireland, gonna quit buying something made by the Irish? It's a world economy guys, get used to it or perish an isolationist.

Also, you country folks could try going online to get your stuff. You know:

tacklewarehouse.com etc...

This is what gets me. People think WM is the devil cause it ran mom and pops out of business. They think mom and pops would be better yet they urge us country bumpkins to go online to get our tackle. I suspect many who wished there were mom and pops back would, in reality, just buy online anyways cause there are more choices online. Reason I say this because most of the mom and pops that closed were in country bumpkin towns like mine. WM's, in Texas, were started in SMALL country bumpkin towns then they opened up in the cities.

Walmart is one of the largest employers in the US and has a great profit sharing program for the thousands who work for them. The fishing department sold/sells a lot of US made products and usually the basic colors on some of our more popular brands of tackle. I know that some guys (egos ?) may not want them being seen in Walmart, but I would bet a paycheck that his wife shops there and often! Like or lump it, they are in business because they sell products at prices that people like and it doesn't matter where that product comes from if it's something you're looking for. Try living in a part of the country where there are no BPS, Gander Mountain, Cabelas or Academy within 60 to 100 miles of you. Those smaller tackle shops are expensive, FACT, so you get what you can at Walmart and buy the hard to find stuff at the small tackle dealers. Case in point, North Georgia where I now live.

I worked for walmart for over eight years, their profit sharing and benefits are not that great

My wife has been with em since 1978 and her ps is a heck of a lot better than most people that don't work at WM, including me.

I have about a dozen Magellan fishing shirts. A quick check of the labels showed most were made in India, also a couple from SriLanka and one from Bangladesh.

I cut way back on my shopping at Wal-Mart immediately after they took out the gun sales in most of their stores. A couple of weeks ago, I stopped shopping there completely because they put out a newspaper article stating that they were going to hold the paperwork on all gun sales indefinitely in order to help reduce crime. (If holding the paperwork cuts back on crime, I'll eat my hat. All holding the paperwork does is help people like Hillary and Obama find out who has guns so they can take them away like the Brits & Aussies did.) If they are not going to support our Second Amendment rights, I'm not going to support them with my money! Long Die Wal-Mart!!! They've caused the death of too many small businesses already..

With gas prices the way they are, us folks out in the sticks have to pick and choose where and what we get. I like Wal-Mart but only for a few things. I use Big Game and they have it. Cheaper than driving 51 miles to BPS or ordering online. Wal-Mart is a prime example of what the mom and pop stores aspire to be. If mom and pop had the vision Sam did do you think they would have restrained from expanding?

I used to work in the grocery industry and I did price checks twice a month on wally world and 5 other grocery chains comparing prices on the same items that each store carried. I hate to tell everyone that their grocery prices aint cheap either. People only shop there cause they can get everything they want at one place. I rarely shop there.

There has been a few in depth articles in Fishing tackle Retailer confirming that they are scaling back. Its an industry publication and one that is trusted so I would think there is merit to it.

I can confirm Mark's statement above. I've been work at Mack's pretty much full time for the last five months. I had the chance to read his back issues of this publication.

The deal is that Wally World is wants to maximize their profits. This means that they are trying to maximize the profit per square foot of store space. Less profitable items will get replaced by more profitable items. Fishing tackle is not very profitable compared to many other types of merchandise that Wally World carries. Thus, it is being displaced by the more profitable items.

Depending on the location, each Wally World will carry only those fishing items that are most profitable to that store. Wally Worlds bottom line is ALL that Wally World HQ is interested in period.

For the angler the choice is to support locally owned independent tackle shops, and have to pay more for lures, or shop with the 'big boys' and pay $0.50 to a $1.00 less per bag on soft plastics, etc., but lose the convince of having a relatively well stocked local shop that offers a significant variety of lures, and other tackle.

I am so glad to hear these comments about Walmart. They are the death of us all. They have been monopolistic for so long, and yes they do run people out of business. Then they hire those unfortunate people, work them to death, and don't pay squat!!! I do work for a big box retailer, and love it. Expect More, Pay Less. great company, but pitiful fishing department, unless you are 4, and want a snoopy pole. Then it's a good deal. I, however, never went to a retail store like this to buy fishing materials. I love trips to Bass pro, or Cabela's, or even going to the local tackle store. There you get great service, and pick up tips, tricks, and most importantly, information along the way. I can't tell you how many times I have picked up some great tips, or locations to fish, from visiting a local tackle dealer. Great conversations, and just fun to do. America needs more places like that.

I did not know they were doing that. You have a great point there. I am a firm believer in our Constitution! We cannot be a free country without privacy and rights. They keep chipping away at our rights, a little bit at a time. The country that takes away the citizens rights to carry arms, is a country with an agenda...and I don't mean in a good way either.

hell I'm starting to hate their fishing section too, wish there was a bigger selection... but the fact is, if I'm not fully equipped to go fishing at the drop of a hat, I'm going to have to stop at wal-mart to get exactly what I want... Academy is around 40 minutes away in the opposite direction and the only gas station around here with good supplies charges a lot more for them... with gas the way it is, I want to pay less, and if that is wal-mart then oh well, someone who works there and lives in america will benefit from the group I am in...

Ok, I changed my mind about saying more on Wal Mart ... short version. It's called the 'law of unintended consequences' in economics ...

Wal Mart imports huge amounts of plastic stuff (cheaply made) from China, so now China needs more & more oil. Oil to produce the plastic from, oil for their trucks to transport materials and goods, oil to provide power for their factories, etc. Over the years, as China needs more oil, they consume it and BID the price up in the futures markets against America.

Not saying that Wal Mart is the cause of high gas prices, but they're contributed greatly through unintended consequences. We've sown the wind of low wal mart prices and are now reaping the whirlwind ...

Wife and I were in Walmart last week. I went off on my own and needed assistance finding a product. The first worker I asked did not speak english. Neither did the second. Tucked my tail and found the wife in the grocery dept. and kept my mouth shut. Wondered how someone that did not speak english could work in a store until I began looking around at most of the shoppers. Store located on Wallisville road on the east side of Houston.

I haven't bought anything at walmart for about 2 years and don't intend to in the future. I woked for them for about 3 years to get insurance for what it was soon as I got on medicare I said adios.they expect a person to do the work of 3 people foe 1/2 person's pay. Thir products are definately junk all they want to carry in foreign junk. A manager tried to tell me how good their benifits were I had better benifits when I started working in 1955.

ob As I said in a previous post their benifits suck profit sharing included. I was going to stay to get my 3 years in because I would get 100% of my profit sharing. Well if I would have stayed anouther 3 months I would have got $365. When I left there I went to work in a tackle shop at $2 more an hour+ instead of 10% discount I either get things at no cost or at cost.

Of course you don't know too much about your local gunshop laws do you...

Each FFL holder has a bound book that is required to have a minimum of weapon description, who it was bought from and who it was sold to... Do you know what the law requires be done with this book if the store goes out of business, loses it's FFL or the FFL holder dies? The book along with all the yellow forms are to be shipped to the ATF...

Wal-mart is doing you a favor by holding onto that paperwork, their alternative is to ship it to the ATF.
