Cool! In my book a much more useful tool than the Corvette.

As soon as the water gets below 200,000 cfm I am up for some fishing \:\) Scott said it's really been blasting out of there.

Yeah, a new boat is a joyous thing!

Artan, I'd just touch base with Scott, I trust him far more than the reports, those guys that post that stuff and call the shots are unpredictable.

Artan,

I was not trying to be a buzzkill. That is fantastic that you got a jonboat. There is one sitting on a trailer with no motor, just languishing away in these peoples' back yard and I wish I had it every time I drive by.

Just thinking of the safety factor what with all that roaring water and jonboats being more of calm water boats as far as I know.

Artan, have fun with the boat.

Here's a link that shows the lake data for Texoma. It looks like they've closed the flood gates. The discharge has dropped from 20,000 to 4,600 cfm.

Thank you Rex, a zero and a comma can make a world of difference!
Still 20,000 is a lot of water.

Robin, I sure hope we never see 200,000 coming out of Texoma. That would be scary.

Aw man, don't second guess it. All boats are a trade-off until someone invents the hovering Star Wars boat.

Taht is a unique place below the dam and on calm days I've seen loads of jonboaters out there happy as clams at high tide.

Artan,

I'll be interested to hear how you like the jon boat for fly fishing. Considering one myself.

What size did you get and what kind of power?

A quick bit of unsolicited advice: try casting standing in the bottom of the boat while it is in calm water before you go to the time and expense of building a deck. I cast standing in the bottom of my 14'long X 56" wide fiberglass flatbottom in smaller ponds, but if the wind starts to gust it just doesn't feel safe. If the wind would blow steadily it wouldn't be a problem, but the unpredictable gusts have made me come close to falling a couple of times. Fishing on a river would only compound this problem due to currents and debris.

I've also got a theory that casting sitting down might allow you to creep up on spooky fish a bit more easily, but I'm not sure about that. Maybe some of the more experienced fly fishermen here could comment on that.

I think you lose too much sight... if you can cast farther, stay standing, you can see much farther. Not that you're wrong or anything I just like as much advance notice as possible that I'm going to be able to see the fish... oh, and I'm assuming sight fishing.

Artan,
Do you own a 4WD? Launching in the river can be a big mistake without 4WD. Be sure you have a spare prop or shear pins. There are lots of sumerged logs in the river. Not sure I would venture out in a jonboat during generation. You have to know your boat and what it is capable of handling.

Txredraider,

I'm not sure it makes much difference...its the boat that really scares the fish quickly in very shallow water. They can sense its presence from good distances. It is far better, in almost all flats situations, to get in the water and wade rather than use the boat....but muddy soft bottoms often preclude that.
