Went out from The Fish Spot to fish the shoreline of Skyline.
Clint shows up and says "aw man, I forgot my wading shoes". I don't think that was an accident! It wouldn't have mattered anyway. By the time we reached our destination at 6:30, the winds were already at 15, and by 7:30, the wind was 20-25. We found a couple of nice slicks and had a few bites fishing them, but no hook-ups. There was ample scattered bait and visibility was about 1'. The slicks seemed to be Glass minnows being fed on by small fish.
When we reached the floodgates at Moses, we had had enough of the wind and decided to get some shrimp and soak them in protected waters.
We anchored off the channel on the inside of the gates and the tide was coming in hard. I threw 1 shrimp out under a popping cork and one freelining om bottom in the current. About the fourth time I popped my cork, I turned and saw my other rod double over. The line started screaming and didn't slow down until there was only about 30' left on the spool. She finally turned and started running all over the place. I would get her within 50' and she would take off again. After about 15 minutes, she started slowing and I was thinking that this bull red had worn out. Boy was I wrong. After another 45 minutes, I finally got her up so that I could see that I had hooked into my first Jack Crevalle that was about 40". She played a little more for a few minutes and then I had her within about 2' of the net, so I horsed her a little to get her to the net and my favorite rod snapped like a twig, the line slacked and something sliced the line. She was gone!!
This was the biggest fish I had ever hooked in my life and she was a great battle, but definitely not worth my rod.
I was fishing with 20# power pro on about half the spool and 10# mono tied directly to it. I also had a 20# flourocarbon leader tied directly to that. I was very impressed that all those knots and the 10# held up to the pulls that that fish put them through. I am sold on Power Pro after today. I fished it with and into the wind and had no problems!
After that hour fight and losing that fish, we decided it was time for a np, so we headed out so we could get to work.
