What lures do you like best to throw at yft when they are on a top water bite.

go tmy attention pretty quick!! I like dark colors because I think it throws off a better hue/target for them to hone in on. I usually have 2 sizes and get an idea of what size to throw by watching the size of the flying fish. it always a good idea to have both the surface and subsurface covered. if they are finicky, they wont come up to the surface all the way. they will stay about 10 feet down and you will see them flashing thru the lights.

very rarely will you catch them in the bright sun on topwaters. it can happen, but is rare. I lucked out an popped an 80# last TFF trip in the bright noon sun! Both capts saw it eat my topwater!! it was one of the best feelings having the captains tell me I did a good job!

Most of my top water success has not been top water but just below it and I agree with the darker colors the clearer the water the darker the lure but I'm not sure if the same would apply for night time

On a recent trip a fishing partner and I were having great success throwing Tuna Hunter Jrs. Of all the jrs. I threw the only one they seemed to want was the one in the Wahoo pattern and were hitting it nearly every cast. Other than the flying fish that the deckie was throwing the action seemed to surround this particular lure.

Another day and time they may want something completely different.

I have had some luck throwing a 7 oz. Spro shimmer jig and retrieving it close to the top like you would a Mirrolure.

Get some Tuna Hunter Jrs. and some OTI poppers and you should be good to go.

When we go out on our own boat looking for Tuna I like to sometimes fish with my trolling lures. What I mean by that is taking a Tuna, Wahoo, trolling skirt, rigging it out, but then I crimp on a 2oz egg weight in the front and fish it like a weightless worm.

It has enough weight to cast far and the ability to sink to any depth you allow it to. It has worked for me.
