Tie a six inch piece of nylon rope to the end of your line and hang on tight. They are fund to catch.

Cut shad works really well for gar as well, you can fish it on the bottom or suspend it under a float. When they take it, let them run with it for a little while before you set the hook.

Gar are great fighters, strong, and they often jump like tarpon, leaping completely out of the water and even doing somersaults. Awesome.

I lived in San Angelo for about a year, and caught largemouth, white bass, crappie, channel cat, freshwater drum, bluegill, and common carp out of Twin Buttes.

The spillway under Nasworthy is a good spot, too, as are some of the spots on the various branches of the Concho around town.

Most everyone is using the newer ramp. Go out Mertzon Hwy and turn left at the convenience store, there is a sign about Twin Buttes park or something. Go over the RR tracks and just follow the pavement. You will see the old ramp first on your left, there is an old unused building there. Go past there, stay right at the fork and you will come to some picnic areas and to the right of the road toward the lake you will see a paved parking area for the newer ramps. The new ramps are a little steeper and easier to load/unload on. Some are using the older ramps, but they are a little flat at the bottom for me. You will have no problems at the newer ramps, lots of pontoon boats get in and out there. There is also a small dock.

The Town and Country off of 67 has minnows and perch.
There is also a bait stand next to Packsaddle BBQ off Knickerbocker at Lake Nasworthy.

hmmm...I thought I had caught some bluegills today.. but after looking at fish identifications online, I noticed bluegills are like perch..I was catching fish that were about a pound..They had a blueish tint to them, was it a buffalo? I have no idea..I've only caught bass, catfish, crappie, and perch..so i'm new to these other species.

Town & Country mentioned above on 67 is at the turn where you go to Twin Buttes ramps. Most convient to Twin Buttes.

No hook. The gars teeth get hung in the strands of the rope. Used to do that below the dam on Lake Whitney many years ago.
