50lb vs 65lb power pro braid

got a question
have many of you guys actually been broken off with 50lb power pro braid? i have 50lb on 3 of my rigs and 65;b on one for real heavy flipping and hybrid fishing
but i have never had a problem fishing the 50lb stuff in the "rough"
is the 65lb stuff really necessary or is 50 enough?
just curious

I have never broken 50lb. Because I do not throw it. I say when using braid, screw it why chance it. May as well go with 65. just my opinion.

Lonnie Stanley recommends 40-50 on his Ribbits, but I have heard some of the pros use 80. I went with 50 on my frog stick, but I also don't have $100,000 on the line.

If you check the line for fraying on a regular basis, 50 won't break any easier than 65 when bass fishing.

The only time I ever had a fish break 50 lb. braid was when one wrapped around a dock post, and I'm almost certain she probably cut my line on an exposed bolt. Otherwise, I have never broken off a fish on 50 lb braid, either Spiderwire Original (my favorite...but they apparently quit making it) or Power Pro.
And I have been using 50 lb braid since 1996...

With braid, I like the biggest pound test not because I am worried about breaking it. The bigger braid does not burry up in the spool as bad as the smaller diameter braid.

I have broke 50 lb on several occasions on Falcon...dont seem to break as much with the 65.

I am talking about when you pitch down in the middle of a bush YOU WILL break braid on the hookset...it is a combination of the hookset force as well as the braid being down thru all the limbs and getting rubbed wrong on a tree...65lb seems to hold up better to the abrasion...and i do retie regularly and take another 8-10 ft off...

i have did that plenty of times txwhitetail on lake waco and it hasent broke yet and i dont retie like i should with braid.

I doubt that anyone is actually breaking the line--more than likely the knot was not tied correctly---what do you think hits harder--a 5 lb bass or a 30 lb redfish on the coast? I've landed numerous reds, striper, hybrids and yes even bass on 20lb braid and it doesnt break--I have used 50lb but that is mostly for kings and big reds--if you are breaking the line catching a bass I promise you that you are doing something wrong--dont blame the line.

I only use 30 and 50# PP and have only had the 50 break once. I hooked a tree on the bottom of Hawkins by the dam. I managed to get the HUGE tree just out of arms reach of the boat, and the line broke. Thats the only time I have had PP break. Surprised I didnt break the rod. And yes Jason, the line actually broke. The only time I retie is when changing lures.

Jason, I'm going to have to disagree on this one. There were more than a few pros that reported breaking off on 50# and switching to heavier line at Falcon. It's not so much about what you're catching as it is about where you're catching them. My Buddy landed a 45 lb red on 12 lb mono fishing the coast, but I can guaranty with that same line he would have trouble landing a 5 lb bass on Falcon.

Ok are they breaking it on a fish or a tree?? I can understand it breaking on a tree, stump, passing boat  but on a fish? I would have to see it to believe it. Maybe if the line was knicked on something. I really dont see 65 helping that much there--the diameter is going to be a little bigger so it will be slightly more abrasion resistant but not much. By the way 45 lb red on 12lb line is a HECK of a catch.

OK now if it is breaking on the fish--is it breaking at the knot? maybe a leader would help?? I could see that being possible if the braid is tied straight to the lure but it would still be tough. As far as the enviroment--what about people who catch 30-50 lb blues in HEAVY cover on 30-50 lb braid?

Nope. Never have busted 50 lb unless I was hopelessly hung up, and breaking it ain't easy.

Here is a report from Sport Fishing about the actual strength of braided line.--I listed the breaking point for 50lb PP
PowerPro1 SuperlineMoss green & white 64.8lb 130%
Now if someone out there thinks that they can put 65lb of pressure on an undamaged line WITH a good knot and break it--good luck -- aint happening-- sure aint happening with a 5lb sunfish attached to one end.

I tried using a improved cinch knot on Fireline but it doesn't work--I guess because of the coating on it or something but it slips ever time with just a couple of lbs of pressure. One of the good things about a Palomar other than it wont slip is that the line goes over the eye of the hook twice.

Bass DO you ever use a leader? If not-do you have much of a problem with the braid tangling in crank bait--happens to me alot but maybe because I use 20lb--little more limp than heavier stuff. No leader. I thought treble hooks got tangled in everything. I have the same problem with trebles. It's just the nature of the beast. If a treble can get tangled, it will.
