It's what we call a goggle eye. I believe in Texas it's officially a warmouth or a rock bass, as they look so much alike,it's sometimes hard to distinguish. It's one of the two.

Loc: TX, of course.
Could be a warmouth or a redear, it is young either way, and (as you noted) the photo is very hard to see.

It is, hoewver, not a rock bass at they do not live in Texas. There have been a few noted in certain rivers, most likely released fish.

It is a goggle eye = warmouth. Either name is used in Texas. In Louisiana it would be a goggle eye. They tend to produce thicker fillets than other bream. Good eating fish and they put up a good fight on lighter tackle.

Loc: Anywhere, TX,
Yepper, warmouth/goggle-eye...too bad they don't get as large as crappie and seems that they do not have a high reproductive rate, otherwise, we'd would catch more. They do tend to 'hug the bottom' and around tree stumps/bases more than anywhere else in the water column.

Looks like a Warmouth...occasionally I'll catch one while crappie fishing.
