Going down there this weekend. any advice for hitting up some nice size reds or maybe some trout? Does time of day effect the jetties that much or is it mostly tide movement? Channel or surf side? Lures or live bait? What type works best this time of year? Anyway, its been awhile since I hit the jetties, mostly wade fish Rockport area..any advice would be a lot of help.

So...I'm hoping the lack of responses doesn't mean this is a bad time to go...

Surf is hammering...so I assume that its windy as hell too?

Check the charts and go at strongest tidal flow. Outflow is better then inflow. Fish the inside generally speaking. (Usually too rough to do much good on outside unless you are using some really heavy gear.) Now if its calm, the outside can be great for trout and Reds. Bait as a rule is better then lures.
Many make the mistake of fishing way out as far as they can cast when many times they are casting over the fish into unproductive water. Try both near and far and work up and down until you find the fish. There are underwater spurs on the jetties that can be good spots once you find them. (I caught my first snook on one last summer.)
Don't carry a lot of gear with you. You will just wear yourself out hauling it around. Take just what you can fit in a daypack. Wear sturdy shoes with good gripping power. (Think golf spikes.) It can get very slick out there and a tumble on those rocks can mean the end of your vacation. Respect folks walking up and down behind you when you are casting. I've seen some close calls with big hooks out there.
There can be some great fishing on both jetties if you catch it right.
Have fun and good luck!

I'll be out there this weekend too. The wind is really supposed to be bad tonight and in the morning but dying off after that. I expect tomorrow afternoon and Sunday to be great, if the water is good color. Let me know if you catch anything good. I'll be with a lady and an 11 year old boy, probably have on a Home Depot hat.
