Be gentle on me guys as this is my first post on this board but I have a question.

I have been given the opportunity to go Tarpon fishing in Alaska at the first of August. It is going to be pricey in airfare to get there. The actual time on the boat is paid for.

So question is, is a trip like this worth the money that I will spend to get there and is this time of year a good time to be in Alaska fishing?

Any advice is thankful.

I would go...
never been Tarpon fishing in Alaska....but the fishing in Alaska is great....
so is the hunting....what about room and board when you are not on the boat? or are you staying on the boat the whole time you are there?

Have you ever been to Alaska?
If not go for sure the prettiest place on earth....the northern lights are a sight to see in themselves....

Never been to Alaska. We will be staying on the boat for three days. The other days will be on company property. My brother in law works on the oil lines up there and the trip is paid for through his job. He works two weeks on then comes home for two weeks.

I went to Alaska last year and it was a trip of a lifetime! We flew into Anchorage and then drove down to Homer and fished the Halibut derby. It was a blast! Feel free to check out our pics here: http://www.buchhorn.net/Alaska/default.htm If you get lucky you might even win some money in the derby. Let us know how the trip goes. I am so ready to go back! I'm not sure that there are Tarpon in Alaska though. I searched all over and could not find and tarpon caught in Alsaka. Good luck though!

Don't want to burst your bubble...but there are no Tarpon in Alaska, zero, notta, nil, none.

In August, depending on your location, the silvers should be running, and the kings just about gone. The trout fishing should be excellent.....but the Tarpon will be off the Texas coast, within about 5 to 7 miles of Galveston.

I could be wrong on the species of fish. He mentioned Tarpon in the conversation so I assumed that is what the trip was for. If that is a mistake on my part please disregard the statement.

Awesome pics by the way.....

I'm headed that way in june. I go every summer for the king/sockeye salmon run. I would not go to Alaska just to fish for halibut. For me halibut fishing is pretty boring. You are just anchored fishing dead bait on the bottom 300+ feet down and reeling up a sheet of plywood. Yes, the boat ride out is nice. You'll see glaciers, whales, sea lions, puffins and maybe a bear. Now halibut IS a damn good eatin fish, don't get me wrong. It's just not a lot of action in fishing for them.

Good luck with the tarpon.

That Alaska trip sounds like a blast. If I were you I'd jump on it. I'm sure you did get confused about the tarpon though as none have ever ventured that far north. That being said though, I bet there's nothing like hooking a king salmon on the Kenai River.

I lived in Alaska for 5 years. I'm in the Air Force. 1st week of August is awesome in Alaska. The Halibut fishing is awesome out of Seward or Homer...I recommend Homer. The Red Salmon on the Kenia and Russian river are making there second run around that time and if you get a running start, you can run across the river on their backs in some places. OK that's an exagerration, but you get the point. The silver salmon are staggin off the coast and can be caught with ease in the saltwater. The Air Force gave me a 5 year all expense paid fishing vacation up there as far as I was concerned. As for Tarpon, either you got it wrong or someone is pulling your chain. The only other sport fish up there really is Lingcod.
