We made our first "spring" POC trip this post weekend. It was our first time down since mid Feb and I didn't have any good ideas about where to fish. As it turned out, tides were low early with high tide after dark and Saturday had a strong north wind and threatend rain most of the day. The plus side was the ramps weren't crowded, bait shrimp was available, and the weather basically canceled out half the places I was thinking about fishing. We ended up fishing the jetty. The incoming tide had made inside the channel unfishable. Large mats of some sort of vegetation clogged the deep water side. The shallow side looked like chocolate milk. The ran out side the jetty and found good looking water, protection from the wind, and some bait moving. We set up next to the rocks and got some finger mullet out and fished shrimp next to the rocks. After moving around some, we ended up with a few sheephead, puppy drum, and whiting. A decent amount of filets but not exactly spectacular. The fishing was slow.
The bull red bite was good on the mullet. We caught four with the largest being 42" before running out of bait. The reds seemed very frisky. All were released. We also had a first for the year. A whiting head rigged for bait was chomped by a small shark immediatly after it was cast out. The shark was about 48" long. The whiting tail also got chomped by the sharks twin about 15 minutes later. I guess the shark are moving back in. We also tried fresh cracked blue crab but had no takers.
