""We're having trouble finding the numbers that we need with the skills that are required to do these jobs," AT&T Chief Executive Randall Stephenson told a business group in San Antonio, where the company's headquarters is located." <snip> " Stephenson said he is especially distressed that in some U.S. communities and among certain groups, the high school dropout rate is as high as 50 percent. "If I had a business that half the product we turned out was defective or you couldn't put into the marketplace, I would shut that business down," he said." http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080327/tc_nm/att_workforce_dc

Maybe we can only pay 1/2 of our phone bills now?

i agree. kids are more focuced on how good they can play sports/music instead of getting a good education and learning job skills.

Just another excuse for them to legitimize global IT outsourcing. I can tell you there is no shortage of skill workers, but there is a shortage of skilled workers that want to be treated by [censored], benefits cut every year, crappy health care, minimal raises, and still work 50 + hours/week.

I'm also in the IT field and i hate outsourcing. But i have to say, i havent seen too many good it workers come thur this company or the last 2 i worked at. I'm sorry but just because you have a degree in computer science or something similar doesnt make you a good IT person. College teaches you how computers are "supposed" to work, but anybody who's been around knows that how they are supposed to work and how they really work are 2 very different things.

Reality is this: They want to bring in more Chinese computer "nerds" that will work for peanuts. It is what it is!

I work for AT&T and I see the azz clowns that we hire, he's right nothing but big pile of nuttn out there. My generation thinks they should start at the top, not work their way up and they will not take a job that doesn't fit their ideal. I'm 26 got buddies who graduated with me who "can't" find work. They want to come in at noon and be off at five. They're all spoiled and get some part time job and live off their parents till they quit paying for them. thats exactly it. They think fresh out of college they shoudl be making 50 ro 60 grand a year. I'm sorry but it isnt happening unless you know somebody. Fresh out of college with an IT degree...you're gonna get about 30-35k a year to start.

Yep ..been here almost 26 years. Look it's a fact, there aren't many "lifers" anymore in corporations. Everyone thinks they can job hop every 1-2 years, and increase their worth every time. I have had job openings available in my group for 2 years now for highly skilled IP Networking Senior Network Engineers. I have even posted a few times here on the TFF. Unfortunately most are not qualified, or willing to hire into a unique field and work their way to a substantial career. We're not a kiddie playground on the inside, nor are we a training lab for script kiddies fresh out of a Certification class. We have some of the most talented IP Professionals in the workforce. AT&T is transitioning from a legacy dial tone company to an IP based company. We have over 400k subscribers watching TV over the internet now. There are many departments of AT&T, and the ones he's talking about are not in the "hamburger flipping" field. BTW - I'm still looking for some well seasoned IP Professionals.
