This is an old rumor - there is a guy who did sort of myth buster type tests on this. When the waders fill up - the water inside the waders is the same weight as the water outside of them - so why would that water sink?
Your waders would fill up - you either swim/walk with them to shore - that is when they get heavy!
YouTube Wader Myth

I thouhgt abut this too for a while till I saw some of this information. I don't think about it too much now.

I don't know about you fellows but i only where my waders when I'm hunting; any other time I'm out it's usually 100 dergrees and the water is not much cooler than that.....

I have filled my waders up before while hunting and the only thing happened is I got real cold....

I am in very bad need of new waders..Will buy this weekend.. Mine are neoprene and they leak to the point that I am wet the second I hit the water. Here is the issue as I see it. As long as your feet are on bottom and the bottom is solid enough to support you, then you are fine. But when you make the mistake of stepping into a hole, and that hole gets you in over your head, it can be very difficult to get back to ground that you can stand up on. Other than that you will just be heavier and colder.

Be sure and wear a belt over the waders and keep it tight.
