He power fishes covering as much water as possible with a proven fish catching lure that he has confidence in Ie. a spinner bait, or crank bait and sometimes and suspending jerkbait for smallies !!
He knows that during certain times of year that fish will be at various levels in the column and he chooses the appropitate lure to get them at that level.
This is someting that he does tell you and he gives much more if you read enough mags and watch enough shows.
Like I posted on the other post, this is my last comment for you. I am done with it. Fish how ever you want, just leave me out of it. Have a good day and I hope that you catch a lot of fish in your lifetime!

Gulp! work too good.... Strike Pro America has top of the line baits. Just pick them up from Chris Gonzales in Galveston at Islander's Tackle (which he is owner of both). They work well around shell/mud bottoms and around jetties. Only the topwaters can be used over grass bottoms as the others grab all of the grass within 250 feet with only half-inch long trebly hooks. Try Texas Tackle Factory's new killer shrimp. It works as well as Gulp! in any situation so far. I hope this helps.....

I am new to this forum, however, the perfect lure is one that the angler has confidince in!!! The best tactic is..... changing the tactic till it works...

Hey Z!
Cool to hear you throwing an SB!
I'm taking some prototype buzz baits, inline and regular SB down to the LLM in a couple of weeks.
I'm really interested to see how this slow-rolling buzz bait attracts and gets hits from reds and trout!

SPB,
How does your list change if you are new to the sport and want to start by fishing the Galveston jetties in April. I am taking two of my college age daughters fishing in mid April. How does the list change if you reorder it for ease of use by a newbie and kids?

Anyone remember the old "Mr Champ" slab? Caught a whole bunch of trout with them over the years. Especially around Louisiana's Chandeluer Islands. But I've use them in the surf at Galveston and the Port A area too, as recently as last summer. They still produce.
I'm also a firm believer in Gulp shrimp either on the bottom or under a popper.
Top dogs, Spooks, catch 2000's...they all work at different times.
In the mornings, back in the marsh, it's hard to beat a gold spoon, rattle trap, or even a big spinner bait.

Knowing HL&S, he'll have a new Top Ten List that will catch anything and everything that swims in the Gulf if he only lived near it...
Anyways, I am gearing up for a trip to the Gulf tonight, and I've got a new trick up my sleeve for this trip...hopefully, I'll have pictures to boot!!!
Thanks for taking the time and composing this list for all of us, especially those quite new to the saltwater. Like I've said many times on this forum, it's contributions like yours that continue to help everyone, myself definitely included...

south padre island, specifically lower laguna madre is completely different from anywhere i have ever fished in texas and baits that may work there dont work so well in galveston bay...vice versa. I still didnt hear anyone mention a double rig like a trout rig. Thats the only choice in lights if you ask me, make your own double rig with any soft plastic or oven spoons. Ive made triple rigs but you can be creative.
