3/20/08 Thrusday , Galveston Fishing Pier. Beautiful day and great catching. Met SjMack and a bunch of other good folks on the pier. Saw a bunch of keeper drums caught and a few reds. Also some really big whiting (2lbs class) . A few broken lines and leaders. Had a leader broke myself and wife hooked on something that bent her pole double and snapped the line . Once again my wife outfished me and caught more and the biggest. :(Also saw some sheephead caught, no sharks and no bulls . Still no leader in the gafttop tourney . NO but hell NO on that dam bungee chair thing . Goning to go again Friday the 28 th .

Talked to Sonia on the Galveston fishing pier not many fish caught cause not many people out due to winds and rain . She said a few keeper drums , some whiting an some stingrays. Forecast for Thursday ( I am going Thursday) looks cool . Winds 10 mph - 15 out os se with 4 Tides . Yes Gafttop are good eatting just the holy slimy mess to clean . Just about anyfish is eatable , just some not worth the hassel . Also the Piers gafttop Tourney is going on . So far nothing over 6 lbs caught . Michial April and May are 2 of the very best months for beachfront fishing . Lots of drum , reds , gaftop , sharks, whiting , and when it gets a few degrees warmer specks , and Spanish Macs. I'm mainly interested in the larger fish for the fight, that's why I target Shark, Tarpon if I'm ever lucky enough to spot them, and now that I've been exposed the Bull Reds them too. If I could afford a bigger boat I'd be heading out for Tuna too. Alot of what I catch is released after the fight and if possible the pictures.

3/21-22/08 Friday night Saturday morning. Galveston Fishing Pier. And oh were the drum biting, and not one throwback. Finally went fishing for the 1st time of 08 and it was one hell of a night. The action was non stop. Got to the pier @ 9:30pm and I ended up with 9 keeper drum and 1 keeper red, and left them biting @ 4am. Saw a ton of drum caught and a few reds as well. and big slot reds at that. all of my drum were between 19-26" and my red was 27". what a way to start the year.

Way to go JWS glad you had fun . Michial you ever landed a 30 lbs fish on light tackle NOW thats a fight . When you use that big stuff like a Penn Pro super 409a345 with 120 pd line on a telephone pole all you are is a wrecker. A jack or bull red on a Garcia with 17 lb test with a 5 ft rod is a blast. One of my best fights was with a 30in blacktip I caught using a zepco 909. That dam shark thought he was a tarpon jumping all over the place . BUT the main thing is having fun < do not want to start an arguement . Happy Easter and GOOD FISHING

Had a few hours to burn so I headed out to the Galveston fishing pier from 6am to 10 am today. I caught a stingray some whiting and a keeper drum. My wife's fun meter must have gone off because she called me and made me come home to do yard work just when things were heating up. The pier was crowded by 10 am. Also 4-5 people managed to occupy the first hundred yards of the pier with 10,000 fishing poles! Did see several keeper drums caught and a flounder and pompano.(women are all born with a fun meter when you marry them it activates. Whenever you start having fun it tiggers the fun meter and they are compelled to put an immediate stop to said fun)

I was at the Galveston pleasure pier on Good friday for a little while from dawn till about 8:30 am. While fishing from the pier I caught 2 keeper drum, 1 sheepshead and a nice bull whiting. I had to make a move to another location however because the CROWD came in force after about 7:30 am. It got so bad because potlicker people were casting over others that had established a spot and then were being rude about it if you got tangled in their lines. I even had a person cast his line right next to me and leave to tend another one of his poles 100 yards down. He was mad when his line got tangled with me and another person. Fisherman's Courtesy, anyone?? Well, at that point I had to make a move. I got to my other spot down the beach and it was ON! Fishing w/ dead shrimp on the bottom I ended up with about 20 bull whiting, another 2 keeper drum and A nice 19 inch flounder. About 1/2 dozen of the whiting measured at about 16 inches. They sure did blacken well Friday night along with those drum on the 1/2 shell. All in all a good day since I haven't been in awhile. It scratched my itch somewhat. I know it was a holiday, but the crowd sure did get to me a little bit. PLAN B prevailed and it made me feel better.
Good luck to all.

Happy Easter and GOOD FISHING I used to go catfishing w/ a 4# test line, so I know what it's like to fight big fish on light gear. Most would call what I fish with now light. I have 3 rods, one w/ 25#, then 40# and finally 60#, and when I off shore I usually start off with the lighter rods, and depending on what we are catching move up the like to the heavier ones. The thing is there is nothing like getting a 150# spinner or blacktip next to the boat on 40 or 60# line. Once it's next to the boat the real fun begins. I still break out the light rods/reels when I am bored fishing the lakes around here. Makes for some interesting afternoons

i was trying to explain light tackly fishing to some people at the pier friday night. i said its no fun just horsing the fish in. about the best fight ive EVER had was a 27lb jack on a trout rod and a 6500c spooled with 10lb. i almost got spooled 3 times. ive caught and landed quite a few bullreds with trout tackle, but those just dont run like a jack does. even with most of my shark tackle, i dont load my reels with anything over 30lb.

Even once had a dumbass push me down . Now I am crippled had Polio . My wife she told my friends not to get involved so we went to our truck . 10 min utes later my wife and 2 Galveston Policemen went and arrested the butthead. If everone would just take the time to TRY to get along world would be nicer. l

BOBTx I'm glad to hear that the a hole was dealt with. Because I was by myself that day, I just said my piece and left the scene. No use in fighting over a fishing spot. What made it so nice that day was that I was able to go elsewhere and do just as good if not better with not a soul fishing near me. I was able to eat and freeze some of my catch that day.
Redfish 15, Just go buy some dead shrimp, fish it on the bottom and you'll probably catch all you want. I caught all my fish on dead shrimp on the bottom. I had live shrimp, but nothing would eat em. The smellier the better on that day.
Hopefully I can make another trip down there soon because it's only going to get better. I need to know when the specks start showing up usually. I know the water temps are creeping upward, so I'm sure it won't be long. Those bottom feeders are good, but man I like to fish the surf for those trout. I usually wade the surf, but is the Pier productive?

I'm headed to the 61st street pier in the morning to take advantage of the Wednesday senior discount and to fish the incoming tide in the afternoon. Hope to do well with all these reports coming in. If I get anything I will post a report. Thanks to all who have been reporting. I'm ready for some rest and relaxation at the beach.

Man what a basshole I'm glad he went to jail! I went to the Galveston fishing pier today from 11 am to 5 pm. The wind almost blew me off the pier. I did manage to catch 5 bull whiting two nice sized sheepshead and a bonnet head shark. I also caught one sand trout which I cut up for bait, but none of the fish were interested in it only dead shrimp. Several people fishing in the am limited out on keeper drum and sheepshead.

which pier are you referring to? There are at least 3 maybe 4 that I know of. I fished the surf just west of the pier at 90th street and only caught 1 shark. No other bites whatsoever. The wind was at gale force, the waves were whitecaps so you couldnt walk out very far and the sun was hidden most of the day behind the clouds which made it cold. We fishe from 11 am to 4 pm and only 1 fish to show for our work.
