Ignore the guys on the bank talking about snakes. You'll quickly learn that you can't tube fish anywhere that someone can see you without them talking about snakes. It's as much a part of tube fishing as getting wet.
99.999% of the time the snakes you'll see in the water are harmless water snakes. Spend some time googling water moccasins and you'll learn to identify a real threat from a non-threatening snake.

Tubed/kayaked close to a dozen times at Joe Pool last summer, have yet to see a snake more than a few feet from shore. Just do what KD suggested, learn what a water moccasin looks like when swimming and then go fish. But do look around once and a while so you don't get a point blank surprise and have to turn your favorite rod into a 7 foot snake beating stick.

Not true- When you are fishing in 30 degree or colder weather all they want to talk about is either how crazy or how manly you are, not realizing that between insulated coveralls, thermal underwear and the fact you are pretty much out of the wind and in water warmer than the air, they are the ones getting cold. BTW- Snakes don't kill tubers- drowning kills tubers, and that is about as rare as getting struck by lightning.
