The fact of the matter is that there are some fish that do not get caught on an artificial lure in their whole lifetime and spend the majority of their life in deep water.

now don't go telling all our secrets. You told me you were going to save that 18.19 for me. Remember that conversation? See ya on April 1st budd.

Who ever would have thought there would be 18 lbr. caught. I would be willing to bet there is some 20 lbrs running in that lake!!

I dunno if there are 20lbers here, heck no one does. I know IF there is a 20lb bass in Fork it would be in Jan-Feb-March and possibly part of April.

No doubt we have 16lb fish here, seems like the majority of sharelunkers I see are right around 25.5"...and most of the 11-12-13lb fish I see in May June and July are all over 26", and occasionally a 28"-29" fish surfaces. I wonder why none of those fish are caught during the spring? Where do they go?

Just ask Strollin Stroman sometime about how many massive post spawn fish he catches trolling day in day out in May in June, he had a fish just under 14lbs that was a severe POST spawn fish last year. Hell in 04 I weighed a fish a tad under 11lbs that was on its last leg, one eyed and all...didn't hit 11lbs 30.25" long...fish had a larger head and eye than the 20.51lb bass we had for a marina pet.

Cali has some big fish no doubt, but how much of a hunt is finding a 20lb bass in a 75 acre "lake" that most of us would venture to call a "tank" here in Texas. They are not pumping out 20lb fish every year, hell the 25lber is all speculation as far as I am concerned. Certify or STFU, no doubt a big fish...but gimme a break...fish had been caught 3 times. Check out the REAL top 50 of ALL time (not the Mike Long list where he features himself 37 times) lots of those fish were caught years and years ago.

Who knows...I know your not going to find a 20lb bass in Fork sitting your keyboard talkin smack haha...heck the world record may be swimming around in Mexia!

A man fishing the Media event said that he and his partner caught 2 over 14 last weekend. I asked him why he didn't donate to S.A.L. and he said that he thought the S.A.L. Season was over. He was smart enough to spend $20 worth of gas to drive from Birch to Minnow Bucket for the awesome noteriety of weighing in a 6.21 lb sack.

Just last week, I caught one that was well over 20lbs using salted shrimp, a Coke bottle, and shoe laces fishing nearthe 515 bridge. If I'd have known that everyoen was gonna make a fuss about 20 lbers, I'd have posted pics of the 3 20 lbers I caught last year on my trot lines at Mountain Creek.

I promise you that they are there, just not in Fork. Try Bridgeport, Arrowhead, or Eufala.

We need the room!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the guy that caught the record fishing with live bait in like 50'+ of water by the dam? Like James said earlier, those big fish tend to spend most of their life down deep. They come up shallow very rarely, and when they do it's probably overnight on full moon to spawn. Just my guess.

Well, a good book to look at is Sowbelly: the search for the world record bass. It was written before Mac Weakly caught the "25#er" a coouple of years ago. He is mentioned, along with his two buddies.

The reason Cali has so many 20+#ers is the Rainbow Trout population. The CalParks&Wildlife (or whatever it's called) stock the Trout in these "ponds" twice a week. If I had a way to dig a hole in the ground and keep it cool enough for Rainbows year around, I'd be able to grow a 25#er too.

In my small craft, 6ft, I don't fish Fork. I used to fish it when I was just a lad. That was nearly 15 years ago. I never caught anything over 3 pounds, if that big.

I'm going with the rest of the guys from TxSmallWaterTT to Cisco to jump on that bandwagon. But that's not for couple of more months, outside of SAL season.

I'm from San Diego where Mac Weakley caught the 25 last year. It was weighed on a certified scale and released. Dixon lake is small enough to be mistaken for a big farm pond here in Texas. There are plenty of bass that size there. The main reason is those lakes are clear and deep, and also stocked with rainbow trout for the fishing in Winter time. If you look back to the early 80's there were 60 pound stringers coming from San Vicente in San Diego. Then those stories dried up. It was because the guys catching them were illegally fishing trout in 80 feet of water in a restricted area by the dam. Those fish are there, but I don't think you're going to catch them with your average jig or worm. I think with a lake as large as Fork, with the forage they have there, and the room they have, there is a 20 in there somewhere. I don't know if it will ever get caught. But hey, if the King said it, it must be true right? He wouldn't lie to his subjects would he?

I'm not attacking you, I just had a long conversation with some guys that have fished that lake and done the whole "wait in line" gig several times. They said at one time it may have been full of huge bass, but they didn't hear or see anything over 8lbs in the 5 trips they made. I know one of them reads here on the forum, I wish he would post.

http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/fishi...ht&lid=tab5pos1

"That was the story at the home of Mac Weakley, who early this morning caught a mammoth largemouth on tiny Dixon Lake in southern California that he and his longtime fishing partners Mike Winn and Jed Dickerson weighed out at 25.1 pounds on a hand-held digital scale."

I know some guides here on Fork that use hand-held scales just like that \:D

"they claim to have witnesses, photo evidence of the catch and video documentation of today's behemoth on the scale."

Which oddly enough, none of that has ever surfaced. One crappy photo of a bass jaw on the stainless "hook" hooked to a cheap hand held scale reading 25-1 is all I ever saw.

EDIT:
I just had a buddy call me from California telling me Mike Long got another 20lber just a few days ago off Lake Murray. No photos, no certified scales, newspaper couldn't reach him...but they still included a news story. LOL, perhaps a little too much wishful thinking eh?

I was using a heavy rod(flipping stick) fishing a jig in a ditch in 20' of water.... I could do ABSOLUTELY nothing with that fish.. it hurt when it pulled the hook!

you watch the video of K Jordan throwing the swimbaits- and he repeatedly says he likes using heavy saltwater type gear because of the size of fish, and bait he has to heave out there.

Can you just imagine what she looks like? eyes the size of half dollars.... 2.5' long and 2' around... what a squared-up hoss!

I guess we need to talk them carp boys to start bass fishing. They use the same equipment we do bass fishing and catch 20,30,and 40lbs ever week. Carp are a lot meaner than bass. But there are a lot of big carp out there. So it must be fisherman not the fish. If there was even one 20+ at Lake Fork I'm sure it would have been taking by now.

those carp guys, I am pretty sure; dont fish in 20' of water around stumps and trees with a few feet of seperation.AND to add: they dont use the same equipment bass guys do. Next time you are at a show, visit with them and check out their poles and mounts with trip alarms. They set up on the bank throwing in ~10'? of water. ANd if you read their reports, when they do hook one around some type of structure, they usually wind up breaking off. They use high dollar reels with superb drags that allow long runs. If they were fishing stump filled waters, ask them how many would fish "productively" in it.... go ahead.. i dare ya \:\) \:\) \:\)

Fork has a genius design, in that the structure protects the fish. I really had a great time fishing it last saturday! Even IF there is actually not a 20#.... you cant remove the dream of catching it, from my head \:\)

All I know is Fork fish pull. The 6lber I caught last night pulled like non other! Drag flying off!! I could NOT imagine how a 20+ bass would pull!

I don't know how many "FORK BROKE OFF" stories I've heard over the years. AND they always say "I never saw her!"

Interesting topic to say the least!

exactly. same thing, with my 6# I caught last saturday. she pulled like a frieght train even with a Heavy Gloomis. My biggest bass:10 pounds , pulled an 8' rod like I was fishing with a crappie rod!! I hate to say it, but a 20# would school me in a heartbeat! I would be senseless(even moreso, than I already am.. LOL!)

HIGH DOLLAR REEL? SUPERB DRAGS? I guess my Shimano's CTE200DC are cheap and have no drag. CTE200DC plus 50, or 75lbs braided spiderwire. My god man I could wench in a 15 foot alligator. And yes I still have the dream of a 20+ as well, I also have a dream of 50 cent gas again but it's just a dream.

these big fish get big for a reason, by not biting the 2 million green pumpkin lizards with chartreus dipped tails that are thrown at them every year, the big fish are just like big deer. They can live in your back yard and you will never know they are there until they wash up on the bank dead. Ask the guides on here about some of the dead fish that wash up on the bank, they believe there are fish bigger than 20 and they should know seeing how they fish it everyday. MY.02c

of the 450-something sharelunkers caught since the program began, 237 of them have come from fork. that says a lot. anybody hear that five sharelunkers were caught in TX last friday? five in one day, one from fork.

You guys realize you are talking about something with a brain the size of a pea right?

Smart? I feel alot smarter after reading these posts. I feel alot more confident too.

Occams Razor - All other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best.

I.E. The reason there haven't been any 20+lb bass taken out of Fork is because they aren't there.
