I'm heading to RR for Spring Break with my son and was wondering if anybody's fished there this time of year and would have some suggestions.

I have heard that they have had a ton of snow. If the runoff has started forget about it. The water will be high and fast and dirty. If runoff has not started then you will have to use nymphs and streamers, and fish deep and slow. Find deep pools and just drift through them a lot! You can contact Nick at Taos Fly Shop or Jack at Solitary Angler (both in Taos) and they should be able to give you some reports.

Swamp,

Try Ed Adams at the following website

http://www.edadamsflyfishing.com/

I was there during Spring Break last year and my wife and daughter went skiing at RR while I fished the Rio Grande and RR below Questa.

Caught rainbows (9" - 16") and browns (up to 20") and had a ball.

Going down the mountain from the town of Red River to Questa is like going to a different climate zone (20-30 degree diference).

Caught fish on both drys (caddis and Parachute Adams) but especially on small Copper Johns and Princes.

Have fun,

Doug

Swamp,

One other thing. If you can, take a guide to the Culebra in Southern Colorado. It's about 1-2 hours from Red River and has the best big trout fishing in the area. It's a tough spring creek but you have the chance of getting 20-25" trout there.

Well Doug your right about Culebra Creek: it rocks. But it is mostly private and the best guide is Van Beecham at the Solitary Angler because they own sections of the creek and also have rights to most of the good zones. Van can be reached at 866-502-1700. If Van isn't there, ask for Jack.

Go get a copy of this month's southwest fly fishing. great articles about fishing in northern new mexico. enough information that you may not need a guide. use that info, and call the fly shops listed in the magazines. Once there, easy enough to catch trout. just my 2 cents.

There is also alot of great fishing upstream from from town! Take 578 off of 38 heading east out of town. Follow 578 up to the trail head - you can fish down from there several miles! The river has lots of beaver dams up there that make for some fun dry fly action!
