While most everyone was at work or not attempting to put a yak in the water because of the conditions I decided to take a day off work and hit the water. The tides were extremely low as I had expected. This is one of my favorite times to do a little exploring, as structure that is normally hidden all comes to view. All those reefs and sand bars you normally do not see are right there in front of you. I like to take mental notes of these things. They surely come in handy later.

I am fishing an online tournament that extends until the end of this month, so I needed to get a little head start. FYI – The object is to catch three fish (Flounder, Trout and Redfish) as close to the 21” mark as possible. Hence the name – “Blackjack Tourney”

I left the camera at the house so these pics came from my driveway last night.

I arrived to my first spot just before 7am to find just what I expected – mud. Perfect. I launched the yak and headed for the marsh. Yes I said it – the marsh. When the tide is ever so low, I seem to always locate Redfish congregated in deep holes. That’s exactly what I found. I eased in to my first spot and slung a plastic down a shoreline bordering a deep cut. This little Red nailed my bait. I actually though I had an upper slot until I netted the fish.

I fished the same small area for a little longer and managed to entice another Red exactly the same size as the first one…

I lost what I think was a nice Flounder right at the boat before I moved a little deeper in the marsh to another hole. On my first cast I felt a “tap, tap, tap”. I knew it – a Flounder. I waited a few seconds and made a good hook set. I ended up dragging this little potato chip across the top of the water with my Trout rod. I wouldn’t have kept the little thing but I am fishin a tourney after all.

After taking a break and having lunch I headed to another spot know to produce good Trout. I lost quite a few nice fish right at the boat but could not seem to get them to the net. I did manage this little Red so I snapped a pic with my phone.

It was a great day to get away from it all and spend some time on the water. 8)
