Hey whats up, well I just bought a 21ft wellcraft and I'm gonna go offshore this weekend and try to hit up some oil rigs with some friends. I've been offshore fishing in LA a lot but i'm going out or packery chanel in corpus christi this time so I dont know the area at all here, as far as offshore goes. Well I want to hit up some oil rigs like I said and was wanting to see if anyone could tell me which rigs to possibly hit up or maybe some reefs or a shipwreck or something. Like I said I dont know the area too well so any advice on where to fish would be greatly appreicated.

you will see rigs as soon as you leave the packery.
I would head out to the ones on the horizon first. If you don't do any good there its like a chain of them for a while. Lots of different ones to try...

Ya that was pretty much my plan of attack too. Any idea of how the fishing is at the rigs at this time of year?

If you can stay inside nine miles all day then you can catch and keep 4 snapper a person. Around the rigs you might find some grouper on live baits right up next to the legs but I believe the season is shut down on grouper for about another week and a half.

The rigs will have a lot of strays this time of year..

Lots of juvies but like I said you might hit a big fish here and there.

The deeper you go the better.

Hey romeo! Congrats on your new boat!

I'm not affiliated in any way with him, but do a Google search for
Ric Jacobson and his 2008 edition of G.O.M. fishing spots.

You'll be a lot more successful and efficient when you're fishing!

congrats on the new boat, I second what everyone is saying, as soon as you leave the channel, you will see the rigs. This time of the year, you will probably have a chance a snapper (lots of mangrove snappers) and spanish macs. There will be the occational king, but I would not expect you to catch big ones, water still to cold.

Bring some sardines and lots of live bait. There is no limit on the mangrove snappers and they taste just as good as the red snappers.

Ric's website is: http://www.redsnapperfishing.com

I bought last years edition (a steal @ $40.00)
then took it to Kinko's and had them cut, coallate,
and laminate each page, then a spiral binder (another $40)
but now I have a water-proof, quick-ref guide that has thousands
of waypoints. cant really put a price on that kind of knowledge!
ck it out!
tight lines & post a report!

Alright heres the story of how everything went on the maiden voyage yesterday. It was pretty chilly to start off the day but warmed up tp about 68 on the water.
We went out of packery channel and went to the rigs right outside about 3-4 miles out. One of my friends threw up the whole time we were at the first set of rigs. we werent getting any hits so we brought the lines in and headed out to some rigs about straight east from there about 32.5 miles out. and just to say, the water was pretty smoothe the whole time. We didnt have any problems at all. we cruised out at about 35mph the whole time. But we got to the other rigs and and the water was pretty nice and clear. but shortly after we stopped me and my other friend so 3/4 of us were getting sea sick. i've never puked that much in my life. I dotn think they have either. gonna have to get some ginger or dramamine next time for sure til I get used to it. anyway, we were using live croaker and mullet, cuz we couldnt find squid anywhere, and it was about 145ft deep out there and we were fishing the bottom. One of my buddies caught into something big and he broguth up a 20lb. red snapper. it was funny cuz right after he brought it up he started puking. Shortly after I was preparing to throw up again when my line got hit and right when I reached for it the line snapped. and then my other friend had his pole in the rod holder and was rigging up another pole when his got hit and snaped the line right away too. So we were so tired of throwing up and being sick we decided to head back even though we started catching into them.
But I was looking to get some advice. My friend who landed the snapper was using a grouper rig and was able to bring his up. But the line had some abrasions on it afterwards. i was using the same grouper rig and it snapped my line right away, and my other friend was using a steel liter and it snapped his. So what do u guys use so that u dont have problems witht he line snapping? any advice would be greatly appreciated.
But anyway, I'm really excited about the fishing this summer. I know that this isnt even the time/season for fishing and we did alright and had the potential to do much better. So this summer is gonna be a lot of fun once the water gets warmer and the fishing gets a lot better.

They have some good rigs and they won't snap.

Secondly, what kind of steel leader was it? Knots, Crimps? Hand made or store bought?

What reels and what were your drags set to?

Two of us were just using a grouper rig which is just thick mono with a 10oz weight and a hook. And my friend landed the one with that grper rig and my other friend who got his snapped was using a store bought 60lb leader. What is funny, is we all had our drag loose, but I was using a penn 850ssm my other friend who got his snapped was using a penn9/0 and the fuy who landed the red was using some pos reel and rod. Oh well. But thanks for the link. I'll be sure to check it out.

Romeo,

the thing to remember when rig fishing is that as soon as you "hook up"...these fish will be headed straight into the legs of the rig which are COVERED in razor sharp barnicles. These barnicles will make quick work of most any mono. If at all possible, set up farther out away from the rig and cast into it. That way once you set the hook the natural angle of the line to your boat quickly pulls the fish away from the rig. This greatly reduces your chance of getting cut off. The only kicker is...you're gonna need ALOT of anchor rope to set still in this location...likely 400 ft...We use those long lengths of that plain white braided rope you can get in 100 ft. lengths at home depot. its not very expensive...just make sure that when you set anchor the anchor rope is on the opposite side of which side of the boat you're fishing

Hey Romeo try useing some braided steel cable and make your own liters your self. I use braied steel cable when I am surf fishing for some shark or big fish and I use solid steel cable when I am trolling offshore for big fish. ALWAYS MAKE YOUR OWN LITERS. I have lost a lot of fish with store bought liters because of snapps and clips that break or open up for no reason. GOOD LUCK

Alright, well I've never actually made my own leadrs, but i've seen a buddy of mine do it a few times. So tell me if this is a good idea, what I was planning on doing is getting some mono line maybe 80-120lb test. I was gonna cut them in about 5 ft lengths and crimp my 8-10oz weight to the top end and then of course the hook. Then keeping them in gallon zip lock bags then tying them on when i get out there. And probably make a few steel leaders my self as well.

Guys as for the sea sickness, You might try some stuff called Bonine.(not sure if spelling it right but it works miracles) My first time out got super sick the night we pulled up to camp out at the first rig out of Freeport and took that stuff and next morning took another and I didn't get sick after that. Every time I go out no matter what I always take one and don't worry again. That is the best stuff. You can get it at any place that sells over the counter drugs.

We went out again and I used the bronine. It worked pretty well, but i did still feel a little sick. maybe add some ginger snaps woth it and will probably work a little better.

I don't know if you guys drink or not, and this may be completely obvious, but if I drink say anymore than 5 beers the night before I go offshore, I feel the sickness pretty good. If I drink just a couple or none, I'm perfectly fine. incase you weren't considering that.

Siid, here's a 'small boat' technique that I've found helps get the fish out of the rigs (avoiding cut leaders/lines) ... very simple really.

Sllllllloooooowwwwwwww troll your bait on a downrigger past the oil rig - or just drift past the rig. If you're setting for a drift, be sure to have the bow pointing away from the rig on the side you plan to drift past (the boat will tend to move 'sideways' on a drift in the direction of the bow).

This will give you extra pull away from the rig when you get a hookup ... but it does burn extra fuel.
