What do ya'll think? I have a 16' canoe and would rather not buy a kayak too. Can I paddle out a couple hundred yards by myself or is this suicide?

I have yakked out many a bait. I wouldn't try it in a canoe or sit in kayak (SINK). Had a friend who was going to go beyond the breakers in his SINK...ended up dragging it off the bottom of the wade gut.

Get a Sit On Top kayak.

Might want to go over the will and insurance policy first.

Problem with a canoe is one wave over the gunwale and you are better then halfway to a full capsize and that next wave is only seconds away. I'm not saying it can't be done but you will need "expert level" paddling skills to pull it off. Probably want to work out at the gym some first. It can be a hard pull in a yak.....murder in a canoe.

I know of a fellow who tried this. I didn't see it in person, but was told of what happened, it was at rollover pass.
He paddled bravely right into the breaking waves, and the canoe came back over on top of him.
I don't think I would try this.

A SINK with a skirt, good conditions and excellant skills could work. Without a skirt and you are going to fill up before you get clear of the breakers. This is the big advantage of the SOT's. Water drains off and through the scuppers.

Regardless of Yak type, you don't want to go out at an angle to the waves but dead on and lean into the crest to prevent getting tipped back. An angled attack will only allow the wave to turn you sideways to the next wave on the set.
Wave #1 turns you to the side and wave #2 hits you broadside to flip you over.

Wave #3 pounds your head into the sea bottom.

In most conditions, you can wade out to the second bar,(Unless your a short feller) and cast out to #3 cut and beyond. Thats where the fish usually are....in one of the three cuts. Sometimes they are in the first cut and you don't even have to get your feet wet.
It's the turbulance and shifting currants, undertows etc that attract the predator fish like Specks and Reds. That kind of water is in the surf zone and just outside of it.

Most of the guys paddling out baits are after big sharks and find it difficult to cast a half a chickin and 2 lbs of steel cable more then 50 yards with the best of rods. They want to be out past the surf zone since the wave action plays havoc with the placement of the bait.

Bottom line, you don't need a canoe or a yak unless you are going after jaws and then I wouldn't attempt it unless it's a SOT kayak. Getting one of those through the surf takes some practice and still some very experianced Yakers will get dumped every now and then.

You can wade your baits out there but when your a couple hundred yards out dragging a big bloody hunk fish and you see a 6 foot dark shadow cruising around, you will probably wish you had used a yak. been there done that. Having a yak just makes it so much easier to get you lines out there i.m.o., i have a sit-in with no skirt and it works just fine, even in fairly rough conditions. Ive used the s.o.t. and they work great too, but my sit-in is just easier on my back. To each his own tho. If your going to use a canoe wear a life jacket.
