For 30# or less and braided I use an improved cinch knot. For 40+ I use a Polymer knot.

I would suggest a Uni knot for the braided line.
For the mono I would use either the Improved clinch or a Uni knot. Everyone has their way but thats how I do it...

I use the polymer knot with all my mono, and the uni knot for my braided lines and it's worked great for me. The only problem that I have with my knots is when the tarpon are running and I get smoked or a big Jack spools me. Ha!

Braided line was ment for the palamore knot, regardles of what size line it is. All braid is pretty thin so it shouldnt matter how heavy. However, if you find yourself in a situatuation that you can not tie a palamore, then tie a clinch, but you have to wrap the line around way more than normal. About 9 or 10 times.

For mono under 20 lbs, I suggest the palamore too. It is the best allaround knot in my opinion. However, palamore doesnt tie right with heavy monos, for them just tie a clinch and you will be fine. Usually only wrap the tag end around a few times, no more than 4. Also, some like the improved clinch, though I have never felt the need to use it.

Tank, while not answering your question directly, I did want to share a useful tool I am currently using. My problem on knots has always been...on the knots that require multiple turns or loops like blood, nail, uni etc I have difficulty holding the turns uniformly while I finish the knot, especially on a rocking boat with wet hands and 45 year old eyeballs.
The problem increased when I began using braid as my line of choice with mono leaders.

Loopty what problem do you have with the polymer knot on heavy mono. I use it on up to 200# mono leaders. The Cinch knot is nearly impossible for me to get to cinch up tight on 200#...

I've never tried the polymer on lighter than 30#, but may start trying it. I'd like to find a fast knot for light line, and the cicnh knot isn't fast on a rocking boat.

Maybee it just depends on the person, but I dont like my palomar knots on heavy mono. They just dont look right. However, a cinch with just a few twist seems to work just right for me. Just the way I do it and have great success. Doesnt mean you dont have another.

Your right about it not looking right loopty, looks like its going to come off with the smallest of pulls.

My problem with the cinch even with just a couple of twists is that I can never get it to cinch up tight on the eye (even with spit or reel magic). I used the cinch knot for everything in the past until I started using 200# mono leaders. With the 200# mono I struggled with the cinch knot for a couple trips until someone showed me the Palomar knot, and I haven't looked back.

I use to use the cinch knot all the time. One day out wade fishing and the water was ruff some old guy standing next to me yaking away with me and he seem me having trouble with rod waves and so forth he showed me the palomar and I have never changed from using that knot. It is the greatest knot will not use any other knot simple and easy to do.

PALOMAR knot is the safe knot to tie on or to anything!!

The San Diego jam knot and a double San Diego jam knot are extremely good knots. You should be able to find some illustrations if you a do search, I think FishRap or somebody even had a video clip recently. These are not very hard to learn and have consistently won knot tying contests every year and yes has beat out the palomar knot time after time. I also like to add little drop of super line glue to my braid knots. As with any knot, tying it correctly is the most important thing.
