Get under the truck and look at the bolt pattern of the trans pan. If it looks like this it's a 350:

This is a 400

$200!! good JOB!!! sounds like an excellent father son project.. rip out that motor, stroke it up to a 380.... then slap a Turbo 400 tranny in it \:\)

yo may have to change trans mount holes on the crossmember(drill new ones), and the driveshaft will have to be measured. BUT you said it is missing a driveshaft anyways... so no biggie. find ya one in the wrecking yard and replace the u-joints and you're ready.

fishalot you said it runs now correct, why rebuild if it runs, run it until it quits then rebuild are buy rebuilt.as far as the trans that turbo 400 may be hard to find for that being a 4wd and all you could also look into going with the 700r4 of course i would suggest having it done by the 4wd drive shop to beef it up for the use,but you will get better fuel economy with it than any of the others, but if your going to be really doing some heavy mudding the turbo 400 cant be beat.

if it runs, drive it like you stole it until it needs to be rebuilt. like stan says. then - do it right by stroking the motor up to a 380 c.i.
