The pictures aren't working for me right now. I'll check the other thread too.

But a 51lb buff?

Awesome! Congrats Don, that's a very nice fish!

Good to see Paul and I were on the right track about Fairfield having some big carp or buffs in it hehe.

I bet there are much bigger buffalo in there, too!

Justin, what is it that makes you think that there are carp in there. The water temp in the summer is over 105 F. I'm not sure that carp can survive that. I've spent several whole days on the water there in a boat and never saw a carp crash. Lots of gar though.

I have never pulled a carp out of fairfield. There are tons of buffs and like BB said the gar are everywhere.

Congrats on the nice Buff!

Parker,

FYI, I have caught what would have been for that time a C&R Record Red Fish late last summer, but I did not know of the record series until weeks after I released that fish. The pictures were taken on a very poor cell phone VGA camera, and the weigh scale had been dropped overboard (by me) on the prior fish release. The measuring tape fortunately is glued to my gunnel so we got a length and I measured the girth as well. It was 39.5" long, with a 25" girth. Most length X girth formulas put that fish's weight at somewhere between 30.5# and 32#.

Since that time I have known of two C&R records which were granted, 39.25" and 40.5". I came within 15 ft of catching the Dec 1 C&RR, 15ft was the separation between me and my normal fishing buddy Chuck that caught it. Jason has the most recent C&RR caught Jan 5, 2008.

I am aware of two larger Red Fish that were caught in mid 2006 that surpassed both these formal C&RR holders, at 41" and a 43". I do not know if that guy realized he had C&RR candidates, and I do not know if he released them. I have not seen him fishing Fairfield for almost 6 months, so I am still looking to talk with him.

Scott, I'm just assuming. I'm just as happy catching buffs out of there as carp if they are that big lol.

I'm pretty sure carp can survive at that temp, though, though they prefer cooler water they are just about as hardy and adaptable as gar. The important thing would be whether or not they'd get enough oxygen, or be able to find anywhere with enough dissolved oxygen, since they can't gulp air like a gar.

Paul and I had multiple reports of carp being spotted there, both from Redfish guides, and from a park ranger we talked too at the park.

Now, it's possible those are buffalo that they spotted, though the redfish guide assured us it was large, and bronze.

It could have been a bronze toned buffalo, he may not know the difference.

But I think if buffalo can survive and grow to 50+ pounds, carp can survive as well.

Scott, Grapevine hit 100+ degrees last year. I sure didn't see many dead fish except those that died after being caught and released into shallow water. Why wouldn't they be in there.

The only reason they wouldn't be there is lack of water. Carp are strong enough to survive in warm water.

Grapevine surface water temp isn't the same as a recirculating warm water powerplant cooling lake.

Hey I could be wrong but I won't be carp fishing there. Maybe redfish but not carp.

I grew up fishing a power plant lake exactly 334 acres larger than Lake Fairfield (but a lot shallower). It always had a healthy population of carp in it.

It had a great population of buffalo as well.

I released 2 fish over 38 back in the fall. I was by myself onec and didnt have a camera on the other. I didnt want to take janice's record anyway. She has been working on being the first woman to become one of texas' elite anglers. Her 11.3 lb hybrid on CC just bumped her one fish closer to the prize.

Joe Pool some summers ago would hit high 90's in the late summer period.

If you went to Lynne Creek marina (GP side) they used to have coin operated pellet dispensing machines. If you threw pellets in the water along the walkway leading to the floating marina store the carp would come in so thick a child could almost walk on them.
