I saw a 10' with a 5hp crusin' through the boat lane in Port O'Connor a few weeks back. I thought that was crazy, especially when he hung a left at the Coast Gaurd ruins and headed for the Fish Pond. Never saw them come back by, so either they were into the fish or found another way back........;)

Only advice I have is. Be ready to get wet and watch the wind.
We used to use a 14ft all the time. It can get a little vicious out there.

I would try to find some calm back bay. You probably don't need much of a ramp to launch a 12' boat. Boat traffic around the marinas and launches can create some rough stuff even in the canal when all the boat wakes start bouncing off one another. Some working boats can through 2'-3' footers also. I would avoid the open bay unless conditions were perfect.

My dad and I use to fish out of a 12ft with a 25hp, yeah I know we were crazy but my dad restricted the throttle. We used it on the lower laguna madre for a while till we finally upgraded to a 17ft jon, in which we still used the 25hp (much better). I have even seen two guys out here in viringia's chesapeake bay in a canoe and the weather out here is way worse.

Stay sober and have common sense, these are the keys.
I've gigged out of a 8' plastic boat around South Deer Is and the mid bay reefs in sight of the causeway. I've also been caught in a shrimp boat wake going up the Dickinson cannal.

Last summer I pushed polled for flounder in all the above mentioned locations plus bird Is out of a 12'jon.

This summer I have a 14' jon to use.

Point is, the 12' will work, just keep you're wits about and be wary of the weather.

Yall are harsh. It really depends on where exactly you plan to fish. Staying close to the shore is your best bet, and you'll be fine. I use a 14, and even ran all the way across Galveston bay one time (during calm water). You will get wet, so be prepared.

What I like to do is just use the boat to get out there, then hop out and wade.

H3ll, one time me and a buddy ran out to the first oil rig... Tore the fish up too.

i think the best advice would be to wear your pfd. no one has said one word about that. i know their not the coolest thing to wear,but... you can get a fanny pack inflatable that will do the trick.you should wear it in any small boat like this. wakes from bigger boats can come over the sides to easy. don't overload it. i use to fish a 15/42 with a 50 johnson a few years back at the north and south jetties and never really had any problems. you could drop inbetween the swells crossing from the south to the north jetties and see nothing but walls of water. no big deal. i did see some people looking at us like we were crazy as we pasted the ferry landing?? i now have a 16 canoe with a 4 hp mercury and have run from offatts bayou in galveston to highlands bayou park running by the causeway and pass tiki island across jones lake into bayou vista in some rough water and everything was fine. its a 7 mile run from where i took off to where i turned around. lots of wind and boats. just keep a clear head and wear the pfd, so if theres a problem, you will not have to look for your pfd.

I agree iridered, PFD and a sane head and you can use it fine in the correct conditions.

I have been 10 miles offshore and had a jon boat tie up next to me that had to be about 15'. It had 3 people on it, no one had the PFD on and of course they were all drinking. There was a storm coming our direction and I decided to leave (21ft baystealth), since I did not feel comfortable. I asked them if they wanted me to follow them back to the shore, they laughed and said they would be fine. I did not want to leave them out there, but I also did not want to risk being out there in the storm with my son, so I left.

Some people like to take risks, I don't.
