This stuff is definitely bad news. As it is being posted on the forums and signs at the ramps, most of that information is being directed at boaters. Maybe some of this should be brought up to home owners on the lakes as well.
I think about the lakes in years past where the grass has been sprayed to kill it off because of lake front home owners that complained and wanted the grass gone.
Now there is something common between home owners and fisherman. We all want this plant to be gone.

I guess if a person is intentionally moving this stuff from lake to lake then do what the limits of the law could allow is great. but until i saw this post on here i never thought to wash my trailer. i always wipe my boat down and so forth but never really got way up under it to look for grass. I watch KLTV almost every nite and have seen nothing that i recall. Again if it was not for this post i would be clueless. How about if all on here make a call to Howard Elder at (409) 384-9965 or Rick Ott at (903) 566-2161. and all the newspapers around our area and radio and TV. the more we all stick together and voice out the louder it is. numbers makes a difference. Not to just get people all upset but to make all of us aware of what this is and what we need to do to help out. Seeing it on the news is a big deal and would make a big impact on all of us to know its real and to do something. if we all spend 15 minutes one day and call it may open some eyes. just my 2 cents

While I don't live in Texas, up north we deal a lot with other invasive species. These things get transported via transatlantic shipping into the Great Lakes and then make their way further into the interior of the bordering states.
In the case of some invasive aquatic vegetation species, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (who takes their water resources very seriously) will require you to spray down your boat and trailer with a Clorox bleach solution after removing your boat from a body of water known to be contaminated with the invasive aquatic species. This in their opinion minimizes the chances that they will be transported to another lake or river. THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT SOMEONE FROM THE DNR WILL BE STANDING ON THE RAMP WITH THE SPRAYER SO THAT THE BOATER DOES NOT HAVE A CHOICE. Unless this is the case, someone will always forget or ignore this important step in preventing the spread of this stuff.
Question is, what kind of stuff will kill the Giant Salvinia without contaminating your drinking water? Evidently Clorox does it for some of the concerning speicies up North, you would think there is an acceptable herbicide or solution to use for the Giant Salvinia.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife better get it in gear on this plant or it will ruin lakes not only in Texas but all surrounding states as fools like me haul a boat 18 hours each way to fish for big bass in your awesome fisheries.

Another good article in the Tyler paper this morning. Are any of the other papers giving this some press? If not, you boys need to start making some phone calls or e-mails.

Guys, This stuff is the real deal. Historically, TCFWSD has not viewed things like "hydrilla" as posing a huge problem since it was actually good from a water quality stand point (to a point that is) and hydrilla tends to cycle in and out. Not only that it makes for some good bass fishing the grass beds.
Giant Salvinia and Water Hyacinth however are solidly on our radar as a serious threat to all East Texas lakes. Last summer Water Hyacinth totally took over Smith Creek feeding Lake Monticello. We are trying to promote an aggressive treatment for that area this spring and summer although we dont regulate Monticello.
We will be placing some signs at ALL boat ramps on Bob Sandlin with some large color pictures of these to plants. Understand that these species are not rooted and can cover open water very fast, regardless of water depth, cutting out sunlight and photosynthesis below.
Our district will be promoting some public awareness meetings involving lake front owners and fishermen alike. With your help we can all be on the lookout for these two plants which would most likely outbreak near public boat ramps, so when loading and unloading please take a few moments to look around. You might see something that was not seen the day before.
Late last summer some of the Hyacinth was found at the Water District boat ramp. About a pickup bed full of the plant was recovered and destroyed. Fortunately, the Hyacinth is fairly easy to mechanically gather if caught early, especially before it flowers. To date Giant Salvinia has not been located on Bob Sandlin but we cant let our guard down. Sorry for the long post but this is so important to all who enjoy East Texas lakes.
Please dont hesitate to call and report any sightings on Lake Bob Sandlin or Monticello at either of the following numbers. We will respond in all cases and take this threat very seriously.
TCFWSD#1 Office 903-572-1844 My Cell number is (903)-466-1834

Dr. Richard Ott: TP&W Fisheries Biologist, and District Supervisor for District 3C,
Kevin Storey: TP&W Fisheries Biologist, and District Supervisor for District 3B, &
Dr. Tim Brister: TP&W Fisheries Biologist, and District Supervisor for District 3A;
will be at Mack's Discount Tackle, 300 South Main Lindale Texas on Saturday February 23, 2008.
They will be presenting information on Giant Salvinia, as well as other invasive species.
This will also be a 'Meet The Biologist' opportunity as well where you can ask these men whatever question that you’d like pertaining to the fisheries of East Texas.
Flyers will be offered to help with the identification of Giant Salvinia.
Also, an actual sample will be on display so that you may learn what Giant Salvinia looks like.
All are welcome!
TFP

Louisiana has one person on Toledo Bend to spray invasive vegatation. They were going to hire another but La has a hiring freeze.
As far as I know, Texas is not doing anything at all about the hyacinth and gs on TB.
It will spread to other lakes, there is no way you can get it all off your trailer 100% of the time.

Would it be possible to physically remove the giant salvinia from the lake? Harvest it some way and pile it up and burn it? Make ethanol our of it. Anything.

I was thinking the same thing Grandpa if these lakes didn't have stumps everywhere it would be very simple to rig a conveyor system onto a pontoon boat/barge for disposal on land preferable via burning the stuff in a pit that has no chance of letting this stuff back into any waterway.

if we got enough people it might be possible to pull it up and burn it but u would still have small pieces floatin around. then you'd have to let those grow enough to find em. would have to keep doin it over and over. the small pieces would make it easier to control if we can keep those from floatin around too much. would help alot though if theres enough people doin it and makin sure they dont unknowingly transport any on their boat
