One of my horses died. Found her in 2 ft of water in one of my tanks. Horses don't drown...one the strangest things I've seen in awhile. She was 9.

Guess I'll have to wait to see what the vet says.

I gotta find out what happened. 9 yr old horses that appear healthy and have regular vet visits don't just kill over. Kinda worried about the rest of my horses.

Thats strange for one to go down in a tank. Ive seen one or two at ropings go down quick from heart attacks, But that usually happens during some sort of exertion.

Nothing worse than not accounting for all of them, then having to search.

I have 4 mares that are getting up there around 20-25 years old and everytime i have to look for one it always worries me.

You don't suspect foul play do you?

No, heart attack is what I'm thinking, but it still doesn't make sense. I kinda liked her, she was a curious horse. Not a prize winning horse or anything, but fun to watch.

We had some stray dogs run ours once and one locked up and went down. Any stays or wild dogs around?

If shes been well up to this point, but went down in the water like that, its gotta be a heart attack.

They can, on occasion walk in to pond and get distressed from unsured footedness, due to clay silt or debris. They then panic and cause more harm to themselves.

I have seen it done on a first hands bassis.

Trust me it will be easier explaning, than it was watching.

Might want to call your conservation officer or the USDA, were the vaccs UTD and Coggins? Not to mention, rabies. Yeah, don't happen often, but it can. Better safe than sorry. Is the VET doing a necropsy to find the cause? I have seen where a VET has died from Rabies and they tracked it back to livestock that he was exposed to over five years. I'm not trying to scare you, and this is rare, but you never know. Not to mention some type of herd health issue. Good Luck

Sad day when someone loses an animal that is dear to the family and people try to make wise cracks...

And a mod to boot...

Lanman... sorry about your loss... Hope the girls take it ok...
