Hi All!!! I just got back from Rockport and I went fishing salt water for the first time.I was on a peer using dead shrimp and I caught 5 Sting rays , 1 sand trout, 4 hard heads, 2 crabs and a couple of perch. I got to thinking when I was throwing the Sting Rays back if you can eat them. So...

1. Can you eat Stingrays?
2. If so ,How do you clean them?
3. How do you cook them?

Thanks to anybody that can help me with this topic.By the way,I am now addicted to Salt water fishing!!!!! I had a absolute Blast!!!!!!I have found out it is alot better then fresh water fishing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sting Rays can be eaten and kinda taste like scallops..depending on the size..here's a link on how to prepare them.

Rays are also known on restaurant menus as "Bay Scallops"

I saw some natives catch and cook a big one over an open fire on a beach in Aruba once. Didn't get a taste but it sure looked good.

I caught one a couple of months ago and was wondering the same thing. A friend showed me how to clean it. The Wife and I fried it up with some Sheephead. We both liked the Stingray better.
Try it, I'm sure you will like it.

I have had sting ray in Korea, not sure how they prepared it, but to be honest I did not like it. The texture was stringy and it had a strong fishy taste. Granted, most of the fish over there had a strong fishy taste, so take that with a grain of salt. A better use for them is shark bait, now that's some fun fishing!

I ate my first ray last spring in Port A. I gigged one and cooked it up. It was very good. I thought it was more tender than scallop, but really very similar as people are saying. It was a pain to clean it though. You basically eat the wings. You have to skin it then separate the meat from the cartilage. I thought it was worth the effort.

The only thing that bothers me is when you turn them over, they sort of have a human face. Kind of creepy. They have a sad little frown.... lol

If anyone ever tells you "yeah you can eat it" it's probably not very good.
