Just bought a Daiwa Sealine x40sha and matched it with a daiwa eliminator boat rod with roller eyes. Does anybody have any comments or suggestions with this setup?

The sealines are nice reels. They cast very well and I geuinely like the them. I believe you made a mistake in pairing it with a rod. The sealines are mainly used for light jigging and casting. Rollers are not conducive for either. If you can take the roller rod back, I would. Roller rods are good for when you are applying heavy amounts of drag and you need the line to pass smoothly through the guides. The sealine you chose puts out 17lbs of drag. You need a casting rod. I would go with a CBJ70F seeker or something similar. You will enjoy the reel a lot more.

What is the CBJ70F rod

Just as Pope1 stated, the sealine is a good real for the money. The SL-X40SHA will hold about 250 yards of 30 and 300 of 25. It's high speed gears make it a good jig reel. Therefore, matching that up with a good 7' jig and baid rod in that line class (such as the Seeker CJB70F) would be a better choice than a roller guide rod. Knowing what style of fishing and species are you planning on targeting would help in selecting a better rod.

What kind of setup do you want this to be? Until you tell us what you plan to target we really can't say if your selection was good or not.

I plan on mostly using this setup for trolling and bottom fishing. I spooled it with 50# power pro. If it does work out well ill probably buy another one with a casting rod.

Ummm the last thing you want to do is troll with spectra.. Unless you got a long long top shot.

No stretch in Spectra.. You want some give when you are trolling.. Otherwise you just end up ripping up the fish.

Now if you use 25-40 pound mono at around 50+ (min) yards with a spectra backing thing you will be ok, just set your drag accordinly. Heavier mono 50-100 pound requires more yardage. 80-100.

Good deal man! I had 40 pound mono backing put on. but in your opinion do you think this setup will hold up to most kings, ling, cudas and hopefully some bull dolphin?

Wait wait just to clarify, one of us isn't being clear, you need a mono backing of 40 yards or so, then you run your powerpro for a few hundred yards, THEN you do a topshot of mono again for trolling.

If that's how you have it then great!

Yes that setup will smack cuda's and kings all day long. It has a strong graphite frame so you shouldn't worry about using it.

Plus they cast a long ways!

Yeah man iv'e got the mono backing, then somewhere around 300+ yards of the pro then some more mono. I heard it was a good casting reel but since iv'e got the rod with the rollers that put casting out of the question. Hopefully i'll like it cause im going to be takin some customers fishin when it warms up and i just wanted to have some good tackle aboard.

Why would you want mono backing then spectra and then more mono? Spectra with mono or fluoro topshot is the norm. What purpose does the mono under the spectra serve?

The mono uder the spectra helps stop the braid from slipping on the spool. I think

Okay. Well just a little bit of flex tape, will serve the same purpose and then you don't waste the space that the mono would have taken up. You could get an extra 100 yards of spectra or a longer top shot with that sapce. Plus spectra lasts for years, decades even and the mono underneath will not. Just a thought.
