Texas Trash

Submitted by: Michael S. Lowry

Ingredients

4 1/2 cups of Rice Chex
4 1/2 cups of Corn Chex
4 1/2 cups of Cheerios
1 16 oz. can of salted peanuts
1 16 oz. can of cashews
1 16 oz. can of mixed nuts
Pretzel sticks
1 cup of bacon grease
4 tablespoons of Tabasco
2 tablespoons of garlic
1 1/2 sticks of butter

Cooking Directions
Pour all of the cereal and the nuts into a turkey roasting pan, mix together well. Then cover the top with a layer of pretzel sticks. In a small sauce pot, melt down butter and mix together the Tabasco, bacon grease, and garlic. When all is melted and mixed together well, pour over the trail mix while stirring all together. Put in the oven for 2 and 1/2 hours at 225 degrees. Stir trail mix every 30 minutes. When done take out and allow to cool off before eating. It always taste better when completely cool.

My family has been making this for years. It has always tasted better than any store bought trail mix we have found. I am sure you will enjoy it and so will everyone else.

Notice it has bacon grease? So that's a good start with everything.

It is good stuff. We usually use 3 times as much tobasco, along with 1/4 cup of worsteshire sauce. We like it spicy!

Just add hot sauce to taste.

My wife brought home some stuff from work the other day that was a type of chex mix that had I guess white chocolate mixed in. It was great too but I don't know the recipe.

Of course, it's a sweeter type mix.

1 full cup of bacon grease??????? OMG LOL
How do you even get 1 cup of bacon grease? I can
hear my arteries slamming shut at this very moment!

It sounds good though...really...how do you get one
cup of bacon grease?

I've never had a whole cup of bacon grease but my grandma used to save it in can on the stove.

She would use it for cooking. Ever had potatoes fried in bacon grease? Very good. Also, bacon grease is good for stuff like gravy and the starter for gumbo.

Give it Fatty!!!!
Anyone know how to get a full cup of bacon grease? I would think you'd need to cook bacon for a month to get that much!

RYNO:
You get a lot grease by frying bacon in a couple of teaspoons of vegetable oil. Also the bacon is more easly and evenly browned. My sister-in-law also will dust her bacon with cake flower.

A much better variation:

4 1/2 cups of Rice Chex
4 1/2 cups of Corn Chex
4 1/2 cups of Cheerios
1 16 oz. can of salted peanuts
1 16 oz. can of cashews
1 16 oz. can of mixed nuts
Pretzel sticks

Toss with a little oil and dry Ranch dressing mix. Very very good.

I was going to make this on Sunday \:\)
Assuming I can get enough bacon grease...i'll throw a little oil in there to get the grease built up..lol

I was going to add some plain cornuts too. Does this stuff need to be refrigerated once it's done?

It's usually not around long enough to be refrigerated but I'm sure you could.

The reason I ask is because I'm making it for our ice fishing trip to northern Minnesota in a couple weeks. If I made it on Sunday...how would I store it for couple weeks? Is it okay for it to sit out in a ziploc bag?

If you get down to Rockport or Port A area, there is a packaged Chex Mix there in gas stations that I havent found anywhere else. It's the "Tropical " blend. It's the best store bought Chex mix I have ever eaten.
