You can get bit on little drop shot finesse worms in 25-30ft...mainly dinks....Got to ridges with 30ft or so on top dropping into the ocean and catch some bigger fish on a 1/2 or 3/4 oz football jig but expect a lot less bites.

I will be heading there for the first time this weekend. Boy I hope the wind is mild and some fish are starting to move up shallow. I don't have any experience fishing THAT deep.

was there sat and sunday...worst i've ever done..sat was too pretty..no wind and warm. ended the day with about 8 fish largest 3lbs. 25 to55ft range...fished t-rigs and c-rigs and shakeyhead and drop shot and slow rolled 1oz spinnerbaits and jerkbaits and......felt pretty bad when i heard that the federation tournament was won with over 20lbs....then i felt better when i talked with some local "sticks" who didn't do much better than me....water temp was 51 to 55 in the late afternoon. i'm sure the bad moon phase didn't help....give it a couple of weeks and HOPEFULLY the big girls will start to stage in the shallow 18 to 25ft range....felt like i was in the gulf sunday trying to fish in 60ft of water. still enjoyed it and CAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK!

Amistad isnt herself.
Saturday was very calm, very warm by late afternoon and the fishing was tough.I managed to catch 8 fish, which doesnt sound like a bad day but all 8 came in the last 45 minutes of the day.In the same spot,in about 17 foot of water over a little patch of hydrilla that was about two foot tall.Sunday I went back to the same hydrilla patch and couldnt get a bite.sunday wasn't a pleasant day, high winds and overcast most of the day.Managed to catch two fish, both in thirty foot of water and twenty miles apart.

Rock bottom, If you catch a good one Mark with your GPS or something on shore or even a marker bouy and make the same run right away, we did this a few times and caught fish in the same spot.If you fish cow creek you might want to drive to box canyon(I thinks theres a launch there, Not sure)Last year we got caught in the wind and almost died getting back to air force marina

Speaking of box canyon doesn anyone know if the road has been paved to the ramp? Its almost not worth driving on if its like it was the last time I was there.

The road to box canyon is not paved yet;but is being worked on.Even under construction it is much better than it was last year.

Esteban, If you want to fish shallow you might try High Bridge.
there is always fish on the banks up there and you can get out of the rough water if the wind is blowing. If you are fishing main lake probably going to have to go deep with c-rig, spinnerbait or drop shot.

It is what it is.For years 15 lbs was a good stringer at Amistad,The lake was low for 10 years then filled up and was a new lake for four years. Its not new anymore.however its still my favorite lake, and you can still can catch the fish of a lifetime.I also believe that the lake is more fertile at 30 feet low.At this level the shorelines are rockier and the hydrilla suffers. There is less hydrilla in the lake now than in the last few years, and we all know what less hydrilla means.

nomo, she ain't what she was a couple years ago but from all the research i can find whats happening is pretty normal...pressure , change in the grass, big fish on fillet boards, pressure and more pressure..all in all the damn lake is so pretty and interesting and diverse that i love going there even without a strong bite!!
