This has been my busiest January ever. I fished afternoon trips on Lake Fork almost every day for the first 2 weeks of January. Sadly, I haven't come up with much of a pattern. It seems like all the fish are in random spots, but no real key. If anything, the main lake points and secondary points have been the best, but we have boated a few fish in the backs of creeks, grass, timber, boat docks, and offshore humps. I fished the south end, the north end, the east end, and the west end of the lake. We caught fish in every direction, but nothing much better than the other. We had a few good afternoons that produced from 6 to 9 bass, but we also had several 1 to 3 fish afternoons. Luckily, we managed to catch something every afternoon, but we came close to a skunkin more than once - typical January.
My fishing style this time of the year is pretty exhaustive. I throw red & orange lipless crankbaits almost exclusively. It is my confidence bait and I catch quite a few big fish on them in the winter.
This type of fishing requires good equipment. Most of the days, we have had 20+ mph winds. The trolling motor is very important. I have the new Minn-Kota Terrova 101 and it is awesome with the autopilot to keep the boat on course. I can go to the back of the boat to net a fish and the boat will still be pointed in the right direction when I get back to it. I am using 15 lb green Berkley Big Game on Shimano Citica and Ambassadeur Revo reels. Put these reels on a 7' Kistler Helium rod and they will throw a mile with a 1/2 or 3/4 oz trap. The 7' medium heavy Helium rod is perfect for a 3/4 oz trap. That rod is a great all around rod for just about any use. I like the medium Helium rod for a 1/2 oz and smaller baits. See http://www.kistlerrods.com
The lake is in good shape this year, but there isn't much grass in the backs of the coves like there was last year. I think this is because the lake was so low this time last year and now it is pretty full. I am finding the best grass on the main lake. I try to key on grass this time of the year, but I am catching a few in the coves with sparse grass. I prefer a low lake (like last year) in the winter, but the full lake will make for a better spawn.
I haven't got around to updating my pictures yet, but I will try to get them up soon. See our recent pics at http://www.bassfishing.org/pictures/recent.htm

If you're interested in a spring trip, let me know and I may be able to fit you into my schedule. I am booked solid for March and April, but it's possible that a day may open back up even though my online schedule says I am full. If not, I have other guides that I work with who are available and you can see their schedule also from my online system. Book online at http://www.fishingguidenow.com/bookonline.cfm?guideID=2
