I will be making my first trip to Galveston the end of February. We are camping at the state park. Any thoughts or suggestions on what to fish for ? How to? Bait/Lures? What kind of fish may be running or in this area?

You will have a ball at Galveston state park. You will mainly be surf fishing at that location. Walk out in the surf about 20-30 yards and cast your bait out as far as you can, then walk back to the beach and stick your pole in a rod holder. You will catch most anything while surf fishing, sand trout, sharks, reds, sheepshead, whiting. I normally fish with at least 3 rods and use different baits on each. I'm sure someone else will chime in and give you good suggestions on bait and such but I normally use cut mullet since its free if you have a casting net. I run down to San Luis pass and use my casting net to catch the mullet and a few catfish as well to use as bait. If you run down to San Luis Pass to get bait then you might as well fish for a few hours under the bridge while there. Action has been good there before. At times I will use shrimp for bait if the mullet isnt working as well as squid and crab.

You kind of limited to what ever is the surf at the time. Mostly, reds, cats, few trout, whiting, and other bait stealers.

Personally, I would hight tail it over to SLP, Galveston side, which is like just 15 min away each morning and throw out some fishfinder rigs with shad, squid, cut ray, and hope to hook up with a redfish.

While you are fishing for reds you should also throw some Mirrolures and such for trout and reds. If you have 4 poles bottom fishing and 2 people with topwater setups you can cover 30-80 yards of shore at a time.

If you need some inexpensive surf setups, I have 3 10' foot pole setups with saltwater spinning Cabela Saltwater serires Reels and 20-30 pound Ande or Momoi line. They can bring in 4 foot sharks and 50 pound rays.

Here is a picture taken last fall at San Luis Pass. My brother and I spent the nite by the bridge with a roaring fire. If you look close in the picture, my brother with yellow shorts on is out casting a bait. The tide had just gone out. You can see where the water level was. The bridge is a toll bridge and I think its $2 to get across. If the beach doesnt turn you on, a long pier is to my right on the other side of the bride. Its about a 500 foot pier if I remember right. Just past us down the road a little is Christmas Bay, a good place to wade fish.

This is a poor time frame for the surf.
Mostly small stuff to catch like whiting and croakers.
If you can push you're date back a few weeks to mid march the Black Drum run should be on and you'd have a decent chance to hook up with a 40# fish. That of coarse is catch and release only.

Thanks for the information everyone ! This is very helpful. Anymore ideas would be welcome,,,, I can't move out the date as my Sister and Brother inlaw are comming in to join us and have limited time. We are using my RV to camp with ( if you want to call that camping,,,, Probably won't have much opportunity to try many if any other locations, unless someone knows of a better place to camp with RV and be able to fish close by ?

There is always the San Luis Pass County Park which is just past the bridge that has 16 full hookups and 63 with no hookups. that would be your only other option but its sits right close to the water and bay. here is their phone number.........800-372-7578......its open all year. I like both the state park and the county park. Just depends on what you want to fish for.
Of course, the state park has campsites that face the west bay and that would probably be better fishing than the gulf, in my humble opinion and it you wanted to fish the gulf then all you have to do is walk across the highway to the beach.

I just went to the website of the San Luis Pass fishing pier which is 1200 feet long and they are closed for the winter tin Feb 28 so that should tell you something about saltwater fishing in the winter.

Saltwater fishing is great in the winter.. SLP pier closes because it's not an ideal location for targeting winter fish. Not because there are no fish to be caught.

Trout are all over the place, sheepshead, drum, you will just have to work for them and change up your game a little bit.
